Why do people praise this as an epic adventure on the same level as A New Hope?
Its mostly comedy and slice of life drama and when the conflict is introduced, the film is almost over
The only adventurous scene is when he tries to stop Lex' missiles
Its OK if you like it, but an outlandish adventure epic it is not

It's dull and uninteresting. It has moments being a Superman movie but it's altogether meh.

It's just a solid movie that's overhyped a lot by Boomers and Gen Xers
It's shot beautifully though thanks to 2001 cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth and Donner not being talentless hacks like 99% of nu-Hollywood

2 is unironically a better film even with all the reshoots and BTS drama

Nolan as well, the narrative in Batman Begins is structured exactly like Superman with the younger Bruce slowly becoming the hero he is meant to be.

Raimi didnโ€™t steal it. He flat out said they were inspiration and why he did a homage with Peter Parker ripping open his shirt like Superman

this movie is loved for the impact it had, not its qualities as a work of cinema. Reeves nailed it and it did a credible job bringing this angelic comic book hero to life.

They were limited by FX. They pretty much reached as much as they do with practical FX. Why Superman Returns was such a disappointed. First Superman movie with advance of CGI where could show Supermanโ€™s full power and make it as boring as fuck

Weird that they gave an inconsequential character like Clark Kent a spot on the poster. I guess they needed someone to fill in that spot and it would have been even more awkward to put Jimmy Olsen.

It's the directing and score. It makes the movie seem like this epic action story when it's really just a low stakes drama for the most part.

It was the most expensive movie ever made up until that point and they spent a shit ton of money promoting it (also because the sequel was filmed back to back to they had to make sure it would be a hit)
The movie literally begins by telling the audience how important the character is to American history. They even held a premiere for the Royal Family and another at the Kennedy Center.

The one great Superman film is The Mechanical Monsters, eight minutes of Superman fighting giant robots and rescuing Lois from a villain and a volcano. That was the peak, and it's all been downhill ever since.

Honestly the entire cast is flawless. Gene Hackman is charismatic as hell as the lovable scoundrel type, and Margot Kidder absolutely nailed Lois' dichotomy of driven professional and mush-brained lovestuck girl when Superman is around.

It was intended to be the first part of a double feature with Superman II. They were filmed simultaneously but the cost overruns resulted in the sequel getting delayed and the first one being reworked as a standalone film. This was supposed to be the first half of the story. Originally it was Luther's nukes that freed Zod from the phantom zone at the end of the first movie, and Lois's death and the time reversal came later at the end of the second.

- Impeccable cast incuding the single greatest actor to portray Superman to date
- Is played 100% straight without a hint of self-awareness or mockery, even during sillier moments
- Donner's direction, Unsworth's photography, and Williams' score are all on fire
- Superb production design

Yeah the script can be stupid, Luthor's only lackeys being a retard and a sexoo stick out particularly, but the whole thing is made with so much enthusiasm and passion and talent that it's hard not to get utterly swpt up in it

>>212210661

Batman was the only prior capeshit that was a farce but somehow people created this idea that Superman The Movie invented capeshit being played straight

The only major theatrical comic book movie before Superman was Barbarella, which was very campy and silly

That's how people viewed comic books, and in fairness they could get very frivolous back in the day. Superman was a concerted effort to reject camp, and Donner had to fight hard aganist the producers to maintain it
