Lindsay Ellis did some video essays on the Transformers movie and stated that Sam Witwicky was a stand-in for the male audience and the director doesn't necessarily like the type of character of Sam Witwicky because of that.

But they had Sam Witwicky do a bunch of the heroic stuff in the movie's like keeping the Cube away from Megatron, using that Prime relic object thing to bring back Optimus Prime from the dead, and Sam Witwicky also used parkour to traverse the ruined landscape of Chicago and take down the Decepticon's human agent. I think that cancels out the "Sam's Happy Time"(or "Hour," can't remember) as well as the tentacle scene with the female Decepticon, or the flashback where he tried out for the football team, or getting chased by the police Decepticon or his job bringing mail to the office workers.
