I know it's just shitty writing in the later seasons, but I think it's the best ending for him. You feel bad when you see how he ends up, and by the end of the show you don't even remember who he was. The whole show is about these sort of "invisible problems" behind the easily criticized aspects of crime, so a dumb kid whose dad and friends abandoned giving himself over to a life of crime is on par.
