You all forget how special CGI was in 1995. Plus the 3D was actually the joke in that Treehouse of Horror segment. In the show Springfield lives in a 2D world and doesn't grasp the concept of a 3rd dimension until Professor Frink explains it. Homer is somehow lost in the 3rd dimension, just like the kid from Poltergeist is trapped in another dimension.
