>Why did they do this?
Because Judas unironically is the most interesting of the Apostles.

The others follow Jesus but abandon him. They embody human failings but their reactive failings are insignificant to "the story". Without Judas' active failing would the eucatastrophe of Man still occur? Is a "without Judas" even possible? There are plenty of terrible people in the Bible doing terrible things, but only of Judas is it said that it would be better for him if he had never been born...but was that only because of his final choice? Also, Jud(-ack) is each of us when we reject the path of forgiveness that is offered, and to what end?...a far more complex series of decisions.

So yeah, his songs can have a bit more depth than Herod's.

2 of my favorite movies are musicals with a cast almost entirely of singing Jews, directed by a Christian named Jewison.

Here's the original B-side version of John 19:41, including its odd ending:

I believe there are many jewish messiahs that did fall into obscurity after their deaths, but the old concept was that of a war hero so a violent death was expected jesus cleverly preached non violence making his death a tragedy.

It's about Jesus but it isn't Christian per se. It's playing around with the idea of the cult of personality that built up around him and him being a celebrity rather than a messiah. It still largely frames Jesus as a well meaning sympathetic figure who accurately predicts everything that's going to happen to him without really showing or proving that he's the son of God and resurrects after he dies from crucifixion. Judas points out throughout the show that Jesus is in danger, that he's begun to lost focus on helping people, and rats him out to the priests because he's afraid the Romans will kill all the Jews is Jesus gets them too worked up

nta, but how is this related to miracle talk?

>>212229994
Yes. But I would argue Jesus' role as Christ is still central. It's just that the supernatural element is not needed to show what they want to show, so it's left ambiguous. (I guess Judas'...reprise...can be framed as a hallucination.)

Yeah, Judas singing Superstar is absolutely a hallucination. He killed himself a couple scenes earlier and Jesus, also beaten half to death, only then begins to internalize and examine Judas' criticisms

In summary, although both prophecy and miracles flow from God’s supernatural initiative and may co-occur, prophecy is properly a communication of God’s hidden will or future plan, whereas a miracle is a visible, wonder-producing interruption of the natural order. They are related charisms but not interchangeable.

It's about Andrew Llyod Weber, and HIS doubts and musings on Christianity. He gives Judas a first and such a central role because Judas is playing the author's mouthpiece.

No, actually. Civilization as we know it was at a turning point - prior to that, if the state wanted you erased, they could just kill you and then punish anyone who spoke your name, but the Roman Empire had laws and considered that kind of lack of self-accountability barbaric. At the same time, its governing structure was still Iron Age so they couldn't do things efficiently. If you execute someone, you have to put it to paper and that slows things down, so there's always more Christfags popping up when you kill the current ones.

I don't get why Phantom is jerked off so much when JCS exists. I have to concede that as a commercial product it is impeccable (the songs are catchy and sweeping, you've got romance and danger, etc.), but everything about JCS blows it out of the water in my eyes, it's such an incredible work. Has Weber ever made anything else as interesting?

Also, where does /tv/ stand on the Gillan-Nealey debate? I keep going back and forth on the matter, both are great in different ways. Gillan's got the stronger and more proficient voice, but holy shit does Neeley emote.

Haven't seen the film in years, but one thing I've always loved about it is the moment in Gethsemane where Jesus demands God show him the wages of his sacrifice and the film launches into a montage of the depictions of the crucifixion in art, set to that pounding tune. Judas's sin wasn't the "betrayal". That was a necessary part of the path that lead to the Cross and the redemption of mankind. He did what none of the other apostles could.
His failing was faithlessness, hanging himself with a hempen rope after seeing his master die on the cross.
But if Judas killed himself before witnessing the Resurrection, that means he and Christ were in Hell at the same time.
And I think Jesus would forgive one of his closest friends for a moment of doubt.

A while back, when I was visiting home, mom put on the score in the kitchen. Dad and I became very annoyed. Oh my god, this is horrible. I learned that the meme about Andrew Lloyd Webber being awful is true. So annoying. We all get on well and we love mom but damn.

Similarly, mom rented Moulin Rouge, years ago. After about ten minutes of cartoonish screaming we had to leave the room and allow mom to complete the film by herself.

The Harrowing of Hell is an extra-biblical doctrine created to tie up in a nice bow the "problem" of the righteous dead before Christ. A preacher won't likely be well-grounded in it, ask a priest.

>he had to have personal sins to end up in Hell dude.
Job, Jacob, David all placed themselves in "hell", as it was merely the grave. So it's easy to imagine Jesus' visit as being an earthshaking turning point. Read Dante's affecting version of it in Inferno.

This scene was played brilliantly. Judas's righteous rage, Jesus's otherworldly stoicism that transitioned to loving accusation on Judas.
Then Jesus goes from "the poor will be with you always" to "you'll be sorry when I'm gone."
Judas is the only one to realize, "Wait, what do you mean gone?"

This facial expression is his moment of epiphany.
Totally brilliant. Almost as if Jesus is sort of rewarding him for his zealotry with an act of trust.

It's because biblical scholarship is a niche field that mostly only believers are engaged in.

Scholars think Christianity is novel and therefore the innovation of a single mad individuals (Jesus) among illiterate fishermen. Bullshit. Almost all of Christianity correlates to Syrian and Egyptian pagan motifs but these "scholars" don't even know about those motifs if you ask them, which I have, via a few hundred dollars of superchat money.

i've heard a lot of stories of this musical inspiring hippies to convert to christianity because of how it framed the religion in a more accessible way than how it was shoved down their throat by their parents and community leaders
it also probably inspired some people to leave christianity, too
it's like a paradox

I disagree. Every scene he's in, he is clearly conflicted and deeply loyal to Jesus. In superstar he acts cocky and gloating when singing, but when the backup singers start and he is no longer the focus he gets face to face with Jesus and looks like he is in pain at seeing his friend in misery. He is playing his role as a betrayer in public, but in private, he is deeply regretful.

Because it's designed to suffocate you.
When you arms are held up above your head like that, it's difficult to breathe.
Add in the fact that you're held there by nine inch nails through your wrists, and you'll try to pull yourself up so you can breathe and relieve some of the pressure on your wrists.
But you can only do that for so long before your shoulders give out, forcing you to release them, falling downwards, putting pressure on your chest and nails.
Repeat this in the desert sun for a few hours until the Legionaries get bored and break your legs, except for Jesus who got a hole pierced in his lung.

A big part of Phantom's appeal is the stage version has a lot of truly cool special effects done live. But a big part is that its a largely secular show, and a lot of people don't particularly like the depiction of Jesus as a young man with a girlfriend who doesn't heal the lepers and who may or may not be the son of God

I never understood how Christians can't embrace the fundamental lesson of the Jesus story as empathy and forgiveness even for the most heinous acts and shy away from sympathy for Judas or Pilate or the devil himself. Surely the lessons of Christ are "even the worst among us deserve redemption" but Christians through history simply don't register that and instead focus on people being mean to a nice guy so they can persecute people without feeling guilty. Christ would be ashamed to witness the state of his followers through history.

But don't let Reddit/4chan deter you. If faith will lead you to making better choices, improve the way you live and relate to the world around you-- go for it.

Take a poor boy (not Judas). Dad who works all the time, mom is a lazy nag. Dad only knows he has to work to survive, isn't educated enough to impart meaningful values, ditto the mom. Kid has no meaningful values, so he turns to things that give more immediate gratification such as drugs. He was always going to go that way because his environment didn't encourage anything else. He was always going to go that way because his father's father didn't impart meaningful values, his mother's mother probably wasn't even there, etc. They all acted with free will, but it ultimately leads to one destination.

Judas was always going to betray Jesus because life worked out that way. We all have free will, make no mistake, anon.

I hate to be the one to tell you this man, you're very likely sub100 iq. You're thinking about it in terms of good or bad or """"deserve"""". This is the only way reality can work. You cannot understand peace without suffering. You cannot triumph if there is no struggle. You cannot take care so you don't meet the ill fates of others if there are no others with ill fates. It just is. I am that I am. If you truly disliked it, you have a way out. We both know you won't do that.

Hes playing a part, just like he played the part of betrayer. You can see it everytime the cameras focus on the background singers he drops the act and is full of sadness and longing for Jesus. Near the end he has this look as Jesus reaches out for him before he shifts back into mocking to sing. Its not even subtle. He's playing the villain, even though he loves Jesus regrets how it all turned out
