>>212228561>Why did they do this?Because Judas unironically is the most interesting of the Apostles.
The others follow Jesus but abandon him. They embody human failings but their reactive failings are insignificant to "the story". Without Judas' active failing would the eucatastrophe of Man still occur? Is a "without Judas" even possible? There are plenty of terrible people in the Bible doing terrible things, but only of Judas is it said that it would be better for him if he had never been born...but was that only because of his final choice? Also, Jud(-ack) is each of us when we reject the path of forgiveness that is offered, and to what end?...a far more complex series of decisions.
So yeah, his songs can have a bit more depth than Herod's.

2 of my favorite movies are musicals with a cast almost entirely of singing Jews, directed by a Christian named Jewison.

>>212229695which is the other one?
>>212229467I believe there are many jewish messiahs that did fall into obscurity after their deaths, but the old concept was that of a war hero so a violent death was expected jesus cleverly preached non violence making his death a tragedy.

>>212228561It's about Jesus but it isn't Christian per se. It's playing around with the idea of the cult of personality that built up around him and him being a celebrity rather than a messiah. It still largely frames Jesus as a well meaning sympathetic figure who accurately predicts everything that's going to happen to him without really showing or proving that he's the son of God and resurrects after he dies from crucifixion. Judas points out throughout the show that Jesus is in danger, that he's begun to lost focus on helping people, and rats him out to the priests because he's afraid the Romans will kill all the Jews is Jesus gets them too worked up
One thing I'll say for him: Jesus is cool
>>212229828nta, but how is this related to miracle talk?
>>212229994Yes. But I would argue Jesus' role as Christ is still central. It's just that the supernatural element is not needed to show what they want to show, so it's left ambiguous. (I guess Judas'...reprise...can be framed as a hallucination.)
>>212229769Pilate on the right.
>>212230625Yeah, Judas singing Superstar is absolutely a hallucination. He killed himself a couple scenes earlier and Jesus, also beaten half to death, only then begins to internalize and examine Judas' criticisms
In summary, although both prophecy and miracles flow from God’s supernatural initiative and may co-occur, prophecy is properly a communication of God’s hidden will or future plan, whereas a miracle is a visible, wonder-producing interruption of the natural order. They are related charisms but not interchangeable.

Civilization as we know it was at a turning point - prior to that, if the state wanted you erased, they could just kill you and then punish anyone who spoke your name, but the Roman Empire had laws and considered that kind of lack of self-accountability barbaric. At the same time, its governing structure was still Iron Age so they couldn't do things efficiently. If you execute someone, you have to put it to paper and that slows things down, so there's always more Christfags popping up when you kill the current ones.

I don't get why Phantom is jerked off so much when JCS exists. I have to concede that as a commercial product it is impeccable (the songs are catchy and sweeping, you've got romance and danger, etc.), but everything about JCS blows it out of the water in my eyes, it's such an incredible work. Has Weber ever made anything else as interesting?

But if Judas killed himself before witnessing the Resurrection, that means he and Christ were in Hell at the same time.

Then Jesus goes from "the poor will be with you always" to "you'll be sorry when I'm gone."
Judas is the only one to realize, "Wait, what do you mean gone?"

Totally brilliant. Almost as if Jesus is sort of rewarding him for his zealotry with an act of trust.
Does anyone else dislike Tim Minchin's Judas? He was stiff, and his singing style wasn't very good. I also hated that show's version of Superstar because it felt cruel, like Judas was gloating instead of confusion or playing a part like in the 70s and 2000 versions, respectively.

When you arms are held up above your head like that, it's difficult to breathe.
Add in the fact that you're held there by nine inch nails through your wrists, and you'll try to pull yourself up so you can breathe and relieve some of the pressure on your wrists.
But you can only do that for so long before your shoulders give out, forcing you to release them, falling downwards, putting pressure on your chest and nails.
Repeat this in the desert sun for a few hours until the Legionaries get bored and break your legs, except for Jesus who got a hole pierced in his lung.

>>212252609I never understood how Christians can't embrace the fundamental lesson of the Jesus story as empathy and forgiveness even for the most heinous acts and shy away from sympathy for Judas or Pilate or the devil himself. Surely the lessons of Christ are "even the worst among us deserve redemption" but Christians through history simply don't register that and instead focus on people being mean to a nice guy so they can persecute people without feeling guilty. He was always going to go that way because his father's father didn't impart meaningful values, his mother's mother probably wasn't even there, etc. They all acted with free will, but it ultimately leads to one destination.
Judas was always going to betray Jesus because life worked out that way. We all have free will, make no mistake, anon.
