Attitude wasn't really all that great. I can count the number of great funds with my fingers and also remember tons of stupid/wasted storylines (Higher Power being the most obvious example) while Ruthless Aggression had a barrage of great feuds and storylines out the gate and it kept going like that until Benoit and PG.

Lesnar couldn't even take down a basic kickboxer like Overeem.

The man is all hype, he beat up one Korean can which got him a UFC contract and slapped around an ex-PRIDE fighter one minute away from retirement before being gifted a UFC title fight against a 60 year old Randy Couture

2001 was a weird year that had a great WM but they switched Austin heel and and then turned him into a cartoon character so they could have backstage antics between him, Vince and Angle. The WCW invasion turned a lot of fans off.

For me the on/off cycle was 96-99, 02-05, then a huge skip to 15-17 before giving up. I only watch Wrestlemania every year.

I really love the way that everything looked in the Attitude Era. That smokey/hazy look of the arenas and the more ad hoc look of the ring and fan areas. It was the perfect mix of high production value plus that sort of rag tag look about it. Perfectly fit the atmosphere they were going for where everything felt like your older cousin was showing you something you werent supposed to be watching.

I watched an episode of Raw on netflix recently and everything was just so polished and way too clean. I get that they want as many viewers as possible, but the charm of this stuff is its sleazy/low browness and trying to make it super sanitized ends up ruining it and at the end of the day, the people that the WWE really wants to view it are never going to anyway.

I like how John Cena is the one who first used "Ruthless Aggression" when he was that lame cyborg character and no one gave a shit about him, only for him to go onto become the biggest guy of that era. I really liked his dark wigger heel character though. He reminds me of Triple H of a guy who went through several very different personas but transitioned between them pretty smoothly and seamlessly

Also, I remember watching some tv documentary about up and coming wrestlers (not Beyond the Mat) as a kid in like 2000 and John Cena was one of the guys in it before he was famous, anyone know the name of it?

Vince McMahon escaped federal charges more times than any other guy his status and got away with so much shit only to be undone by a smear campaign by Stephanie and Hunter just to get him out of the company. His worst crime, after all the shit he did? Having fetishes and maltreating some despicable prostitute. Jesus. He practically had 9 lives and went down in the most lowly way.

Clearly you are not enough to remember the late 80s and early 90s when every wrestler had a proper gimmick.

Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Legion of Doom, Earthquake, Million Dollar Man, Macho Man Randy Savage, Yokozuna, Jake the Snake Roberts, Sergeant Slaughter, Repo Man, IRS, Isack Yankem, Koko B. Ware, the British Bulldog, Brutus the Barber Beafcake, The Gay-Lord, The Bush Wackers, Brett the Hitman Heart, The Rim-Job, Kane, the Undertaker...

All the greats came from that era.

Attitude was when the imagination went out of it, when wrestlers started to say
>what if my gimmick is... i have no gimmick
As if they were trying to be Seinfeld of something. Lazy fuckwits.

The reality is that the rise of UFC and Marvel movies is what led to WWE's downfall. Both of these things syphoned off their audience into a better version of what it was trying to be. Marvel movies for those who liked the larger than life, comic book tier characters and story lines and UFC for those who liked the outlandish violence

I mean that shit was great, but what made Attitude era better was it appealed more to common folk. Stone Cold had a similar tamed, long haired thing going before attitude, but reinvented as the no-nonsense beer swilling redneck. Shawn Michaels was the pretty boy model, and resurrected as the dirtbag ring leader of a crew of knuckleheads asking you to suck their dicks. The Rock was the quiet muscle of Nation of Domination, but broke out as the quick witted, “fuck you, fuck your bullshit, fuck these fans and fuck this town” heel, but with a cool ass haircut and sunglasses. Mick Foley and Undertaker and Kane were fringe wrestlers before attitude era and they fit right into the new program. Dudes that got lost in the fray were like, the Harts. Brett had beef and Vince fucked the whole family over and didn’t come up with any cool stories for them (hence Blue Blazer being Owen’s “gimmick” when he died, fucking sad desu). Yes, the face paint and loud undies and tassles era was based, but attitude brought it down to the nitty gritty.

Lots of youtube vids and some great books. But WCW lost because of huge guaranteed contracts + NWO storyline going on forever. Starrcade 97 Sting/Hogan was the first "what the fuck is this shit" reaction from WCW fans. Finger poke of doom finished it all off.

The only fucking thing that is memorable about the Attitude Era in modern culture is the Rock and Stone Cold feud. That's literally it. Nobody cares that Kane used to wear a mask or who steroid junkie was banging which diva.

Ruthless Aggression set the standard for what modern wrestling fans want in a product. And that was over 20 years ago when Zoomers were in diapers so dont get your feathers all rustled you gen X faggots. Cena, HHH, Orton, American Badass Undertaker, Eddie Guerrerro, etc all thrived in the RA era. It was simply better TV.

I remember seeing a bunch of Sting and NWO properties on Merch, but when it came to WWF, I saw the rock, stone cold, undertaker, Kane, DX, Dudley boys, brood, mankind, chyna, Sable. Etc etc. it had such a wide breadth. WWF attitude era was so fucking legitimate than Chris Jericho became MUCH more of a household name when his corny ass came over from WCW. I just don’t think WCW writers and producers committed and believed in the product as much

WCW started doing the edgy stuff first, so WWF and macmahon drafted up a whole new set of storylines to compete (which subsequently made Macmahon an IRL asshole villain because he literally flipped the script on Bret Hart). It caught like wildfire and he paid attention and the writers kept it thorough and gave each wrestler star power (vs WCW that focused more on big matches with “big” names) WWF gave fans a huge gallery of superstars to root for.

They built up Hogan vs Sting for like 18 months. For all those months Hogan and the NWO were tormenting Sting, but Sting would either fight back or show up in the crowd in the arena and just stare at them. One of the most epic build ups ever. The plan was for Sting to win the title clean from Hogan at Starrcade (which the Wrestlemania of WCW). But the day of the event, Hogan says "That doesn't work for me brother" and him and Eric Bischoff write this ending where Hogan beats Sting, but then Bret Hart (fresh off the Montreal Screwjob) shows up and says that the ref did a fast count (he didn't) and restarts the match and Sting wins. It was the very beginning of the end.

And nobody watches the product. It's made for fucking internet geek marks on /pw/. Everything post Attitude Era has been garbage (the only saving grace of the RA era was HBK's return and guys like Eddie Guerrero).
> It was simply better TV.
The ratings collapsed and never came back. Look at where the first ep of Raw on Netflix is in the ratings chart and look at the current eps. The drop is shocking.

I'm specifically talking about 2002-2008. Modern wrestling fans are like little faggot anime fans. RA had better ratings than the Attitude Era except for maybe 1999-2000. Character arcs were far better in RA. If we're being honest, wrestling has gotten very lame in the post-social media era and any who still watches it consistently is gay.

As soon as they bought WCW they stopped caring and that's when the collapse began (and never recovered). WWF without competition just makes them lazy. Austin even walked the fuck out. Going PG and 10 years of Super Cena really drove the final nail into the coffin. Anything over the last 5 years is just the remaining fans bickering over nonsense. They are too young to remember that one point Raw would have 5 million viewers and Nitro would have 4.5 million on the same night. Today Raw is lucky to get 2.5 million.

You're delusional. Back in the late 90s you saw NWO and 3:16 shirts everywhere. People know Austin, Rock, Hogan, Undertaker, NWO. People don't know who fucking Cody Rhodes or Gunther are. WWE makes more money than ever because of TV deals, but that's about it.

So RA was coasting on the backs of the AE peak until it collapsed? You're delusional. RA was a big drop in ratings and relevance. Jim Ross on his podcast talked about how in 2003 the ratings were dropping so fast that they were regretting letting Austin do the heel turn that he wanted.

Bischoff in WCW hated Thunder (Turner forced him to do it) and even Kevin Nash acknowledged that it played a hand in WCW's downfall because it was just too much tv. WWF then did the same fucking shit. 2 hours of Raw + 1 hour of Sunday Night Heat (not necessary viewing, but a nice segue into PPVs) was perfect. Now it's 2 hours+ for both shows.

Val Venis wasn't weird or goofy. He was just another "job" gimmick and it was a pornstar. The wrestler (forget his real name) was great too.
The weirdest is probably Goldust or Beaver Cleavage. The goofiest? Doink or the Red Rooster.

Shawn Michaels overselling hogan and humiliating him was probably the most entertaining thing on WWF; Bret was an excellent technical wrestler, but saddled with dead weight limited move chumps like Austin that he had to carry. Omega’s had better wrestlers to match up with, that he deliberately sought out; Brett was tied to contract and internal dictates. It would be really interesting if time travel was real and see, say, Brett v Omega at their height.

That was a goof because Hogan was playing backstage politics with Shawn (which is what Shawn used to do). But Shawn's matches with Bret, Razor and Undertaker are top tier.
>Bret was an excellent technical wrestler, but saddled with dead weight limited move chumps like Austin that he had to carry.
You're delusional. Before Austin broke his neck he was one of the top wrestlers in the company. Their match at WM 13 is the greatest WM match of all time. Watch Bret vs Owen at WM (X or XI, I forget).

Kek. That’s why he spent 80% of his career jobbing, failed tag teams, desperate for midcard, getting dropped from contracts. Austin was a mediocre wrestler at best, he was only successful because of the Vince’s sales job of the “stone cold” character. People talk about Austin’s mic skills, but even Dwayne cut better promos.

If they saw it, certainly. And usually if security/an usher, a WWF camera caught it, they would have sent someone to take it (until the event was over).
>I was guessing any camcorders were confiscated after the event to prevent any footage leaking out.
It was done to prevent piracy. If someone could record the PPV, leave the arena, and make copies with multiple VCRs it could be on the streets/flea markets that morning. If you watch old Raws they would only show still images from the PPV recaps because the PPV was still for sale to be watched and they also were going to release the official VHS soon after.

>That’s why he spent 80% of his career jobbing
Are you fucking retarded? Austin was a very good wrestler (there are lots of very good wrestlers that don't make). And he wasn't a jobber for 80% of his career, faggot. He was in a successful tag team in WCW, then within a few months of getting to the WWF he was able to drop the Ringmaster gimmick, became Stone Cold, and won King of the Ring. Holy fuck you're retarded.
>getting dropped from contracts.
He was dropped from 1 contract....WCW...because he was hurt and WCW was only interested in established stars.
>Austin was a mediocre wrestler at best,
Watch WM 13 faggot. He was great and as I said one of the best in the company in the late 90s. Only Shawn and Bret were better (with similar star power).
>he was only successful because of the Vince’s sales job of the “stone cold” character.
You can apply this logic to almost any character. Scott Hall wouldn't have been as successful if he wasn't Razor Ramon, same with Hogan, same with Ultimate Warrior.
>People talk about Austin’s mic skills, but even Dwayne cut better promos.
Again, you're retarded. Rock was great, but he was more rhymes and catchphrases. Austin's promos were intense.

Pretty sure you're making these up. I remember the Gay-Lord though, he was a great heal and his feud with The British Bulldog was legendary genuinely one of Mick Foley's best creations. You always knew that whenever a referee got knocked out or had his back turned that The Twink, The Gay-Lord's "aide du camp", would hand him the special candlestick. It was always a laugh when Jerry the king Lawler speculated upon where the Twink had been hiding it.

Although because of "the controversy" he was erased from all WWE material in 1994, which was a real shame.

Absolutely not. Ruthless Aggression was a rapid return to everything that sucks about professional wrestling. Attitude Era was genuinely unpredictable and full of spectacle because McMahon was hungry to win the Wars. They made the brilliant call to drop the gay and stupid attempt to portray wrestling as a real sport where the fighters worried about winning and turned it into a red neck soap opera with the Undertakers evil brother coming back from the grave and Stone Cold and DX rebelling against the company. The focus wasn't on who was going to win the gay fake championship, it was all a bunch of memorable egotistical rednecks beating the shit out of each other. Wrestlers were literally dying in front of fans.

The Attitude Era was the best because it was the only (televised) era of wrestling where the focus wasn't on the make belief that it was real. As soon as WWF won the wars and returned to the tired Sports Entertainment aspect of wrestling everyone but the weird autists tuned out, and rightly so.

Andre was just a tall fat dude. He was basically a cripple, could barely move, had to be high/drunk just to stay in the ring. He couldn't even lift the guys he was working with properly half the time. He worked because pre-1990s wrestling was cartoonish and he didn't look out of place since everyone was wrestling like drunken out of shape boomers at the family barbeque, but in a ring with even current day Lesnar Andre would look like a giant retarded baby slowly plodding around the ring while Lesnar zoomed around. It'd be embarassing to watch.

They lost because they still tried to pretend wrestling was real. That shit was done by 1996. They held on for a few years on the backs of wrestling autists who liked how "pure" WCW was compared to the genuine entertainment WWE was unleashing with mass appeal but there's only so much shekels to be wrung out of those retards.

Please. 70s and 80s Memphis Wrestling was the working man wrestling promotion.

The sound of the bedpan hit is cartoon level perfect.
According to Mick Foley, Steve Austin was walking around the hospital hitting himself in the head with it trying to find the sweet spot for the perfect sound.

Most Attitude Era fans are obnoxious retards who don't know anything about any other period of wrestling.

I started watching again when Nash and Hall went to WCW and Hunter and DX turned up at TNT in a tank dressed as soldiers and I stopped watching around the time Cena joined.
The Attitude Era was the absolute peak of American entertainment, tits, ass, violence and rock music.

If you follow WWE you can basically track the peaks and downfall of America.

Imagine caring about any era of wrestling beyond the only brief time it wasn't centered around being a retarded make belief sport with dogshit cartoon fighting.

I only watch Wrestlemania and not only has it gotten worse year after year but the fans continually get fatter, uglier, troonier, and more stupid looking every year.

Ray Mysterio and Charvo, can't remember the year but it was either late 90s or 2000s. I think they did a cage match and the one where they need to pull the brief case full of cash down from the ceiling.
