>>212240574 (OP)The intro following the journey of the uniform was a cool idea. The arrival of the tanks created a great atmosphere, even if it's ahistorical in several ways. The peace talks with the merciless French delegation were portrayed well, too. But by and large, almost every deviation from the book makes the movie worse, always causing it to make less sense, be less true to history, etc. From the very beginning, when the filmmakers fumble by letting Paul enlist in 1917 yet there's a war enthusiasm in his town as if it was 1914; right till the very end, when a mustache twirling evil General orders a final assault despite the German gov't having already surrendered, just so that Paul can die on the very second the war ends. Whenever there's a chance to trade authenticity for some shlocky shock value, the film makers take it. Leaves a bad taste.
