I think the idea of there being alien life is out there in the trailer with the idea of the stars being "infected" as they put it but I really think a simple tease at the end of the trailer would've been the way to go. Maybe show him in the ship and looking around and something moves in the background or whatever.

I'm resisting watching the trailer because I read the first half of the book and hated it! I don't want to relive through that cringey ass dialog and the drawn out interactions with the alien (robot?), I don't recall.

I enjoyed "The Martian" though despite it's "aww shucks" protag. That's the only character this dude knows how to write.

Meh. The Martian book was great. This book was pretty mid, like a 6/10 at best.

Bet the movie is going to take all the shittiest parts and dedicate half of itself to them. Like the whole, dictator-of-the-earth-chick solving all of humanity's problems with her centralized authority; you can be that's going to take up a third of the movie.

Ya you can’t do that, lol. They could’ve left Ryland and Rocky’s relationship ambiguous in the trailer, or straight up not revealed Rocky or his ship at all. You start the book off thinking it’s one thing, and halfway through, after the introduction of Rocky, you realize this is a first contact story, then in the end you realize it was mostly really just a story about friendship. You don’t even give a shit about the fate of earth anymore after the introduction of Rocky. Each one of these transformations in the story is welcomed, but the trailer skips over all of them. The audience will be going in expecting Ryland to befriend an alien. Can you imagine how terrible it would be if you started the book off with that knowledge? Just kills the whole thing.
