Before you start thinking of being a clever little pirate, the theaters will cut off seating before the ads start so you’re forced to watch them instead of arriving 30 mins late. Not watching ads is theft.

I strategically pick times where nearly no one is ever in the theater with me so you'll have to enforce it pre theater entry or else I'm just gonna show up late and dick around on my phone unless I'm interested in the trailer. Enforce some method to prevent me from doing that and I'll take my refund and go home with the candy I snuck in.

My theory based on young kids having multiple screens constantly and revenue declining for purchasing new content (torrents) that movies will be like Japanese TV with just constant bullshit flashing and appearing on screen accept it'll ask be ads and kids will just be used to filtering it so imagine watching godfather in the theater and having pop-ups constantly and everyone being okay with it and if you question it you're the weird one. "Just ignore it bro"

You'll start getting "Late Reporters", which go to a movie showing and time how long it takes from the showing time to the movie starting. Then they'll say for example "Superman: 30 minutes" so everyone knows to show up 30 minutes late to the movie.

Can they show them in the middle of the film? I'm in my late thirties, I need time to go take a piss without worrying about missing anything. This is half the reason I don't go to theaters anymore because everything has to be over 2 hours long now and it's just annoying when I can't pause something to take a break when I've paid to see it.

Yeah, but when I was younger, I used to go to the cinema with friends a lot.
We didn’t really nitpick whether a movie was actually good, we just wanted to do something together. Just spend time, you know?
We’d pick a movie that seemed popular, something most of the group agreed on.
So we got to hang out and all that.

Aren’t you the same? I’ve always seen 'going to the cinema' as a friends-and-family kind of thing, not purely about whether the movie is good or bad.
Otherwise, how do you explain why a fuck-ton of mid movies make so much at the box office?

With modern tech, people can actually do the whole 'going to the cinema' activity at home.

There always has been half an hour of trailers and adverts before the film comes on. This cinema is just making sure people come in if they want to avoid the adverts. If you didn't know this then you probably haven't been to a cinema in 20 years.

With that many ads and trailers your popcorn bucket would be empty before the movie even starts.
In France we have between 15 and 20 minutes of ads and trailers.
I try to calculate the exact time the movie actually starts so I arrive 5 minutes prior to get me time to get comfy.
And I never start eating the popcorn before the movie actually starts.

Already solved long ago friendo.
The theater has a ticket guard that prevents access to the hallways and showing rooms. Once you get past the ticket guard, you can walk freely from the showing room to the bathroom and back. And concessions have two counters so you can buy on the other side of the ticket guard. You have no excuse.

Do you guys think the transition from First Come First Serve seating to Reserved Seats had an effect on anything related to this?

I was just thinking, back in the day, you had to show up like 20 mins early to get a good seat and you'd be fed commercials. Maybe a little Maria Menounos if you were lucky. But with reserved seats, you can show up 20 mins late and skip all those commercials.

Yea, nowadays there are ten thousands:
- remakes / reboot
- gender swap / spinoff
- race swap
- soulless live adaption of games
- less convincing visuals because of the constant overuse of CGI. (when a lot of CGI is required, its quality tends to go down.)
- injection of DEI (diversity WAS cool, power rangers and start trek etc, diversity was used as a PLOT TOOL. Nowadays it's just used to send The Message.)
- with the growth of social media, most celebs are revealed to be shitty people. (nobody’s gonna pay to watch people they hate.)
- woke journos (they called Sound of Freedom a pedo film)
- poisoned well (Mad Max: Furiosa has good word of mouth, but flopped because people didn't give it a chance, due to too many woke, shitty girl boss films before it.)

The modern Western era is extremely unfriendly to good film production.

I think they randomly play only 5 minutes of trailers just to stop people from skipping them. The AMC near me has been playing 20+ minutes of trailers (that start on the showtime), so I always come 10 minutes late to skip most of them. But randomly I will come in to the first scene of the movie despite only being 10 minutes late to the showtime, meaning they only had 2 or 3 trailers before the movie started. Its evil.

Triple Feature
Triple Feature
md5: 2292da771eefd314f2f2895b270838b6🔍
In the ten-cent admission days theaters would run the trailers last (which is why they're called "trailers"), but you could stay as long as you wanted watching multiple showings of a single long feature, or a double or triple feature, a comedy short, a newsreel, a travelogue, et cetera, and sometimes even a live performance. In the silent days, the orchestra or the organist would play numbers between the films.

I'm thinking they should go back to the old business model of selling you a one-time (daily, weekly, or monthly) admission price for a varied all-day program, letting you stay as long as you like, and forcing you to pay for concessions, parking, blankets & pillows, toilets, et cetera, to make a profit.

Be careful what you wish for. They're slowly starting to get back in the rerun game because Hollywood can't make an original film for the life of them.

Just recently a rerun was announced with like 15 minutes of new footage, but I forgot what it was. Oh! Spiderman 2.

I'm at the point where I feel like that's preferable. I've been to the theater 3 times in the last 6 years, and once was to watch Empire Strikes Back during Covid.

prior to the 1950s, film studios usually owned the theatres that played their movies. So you'd go to the Paramount theatre to watch Paramount films, or the Warner theatre to watch Warner films. It cut out a lot of the overhead running costs that theatres have to deal with, meaning they could charge less for tickets and concessions. Actors were also considered employees of a studio rather than independent contractors, so studios gave them managers to manage their public image and would give them contracts that forbade them from working with other studios. SCOTUS ruled the system was a monopoly and outlawed it.

You'd love seeing a film at a military base/post theater. Before the film starts, a flag appears on the screen and everyone rises for the national anthem, then there is a short PSA about how bad rape is, then you see the film.
