It was profoundly over by the end of season 1. In fact season 1 was only good till like episode 7 or something-when the English speakers show up. Not that bad english is a problem when the target audience is Korean, I'm just saying that's the point where generally it went to shit for mostly unrelated reasons.

Korean TV shows almost always greenlight more seasons if the first is successful, no matter how much the show is conceived of as a one season story. You have to just know when to identify the real ending. I also really liked the zombie show All of Us Are Dead. They're making a second season. I won't be watching it because its not real. Its clearly not some planned sequel that will have substance and legitimate artistic intent. Similarly despite enjoying the first season of squid game, I even think the first episode is fantastic, I haven't watched season 2 and 3. I knew this was going to happen.

>Gi-Hun was meant to survive the games and meet his daughter (literally replace Front Man with Gi-Hun in the ending) but director felt he didn't want to leave Gi-Hun's story open-ended with him gaining awareness of the American death games while standing idly by
>baby plot was introduced because director decided that "paving way for the next generation" would be the last overarching theme

So yeah, it sounds like S3 was a mess because the director couldn't figure shit out.
