Yes, which is achieved through technology. But it is also about identity and what defines us as what we are: are we our memories? Choices? If we merge ourselves with technology, are we human or... Something else?

The frivolities of Mcdonalds. It accurately predicted the price of a cheeseburger, and that toys in the happy meals wouldnโ€™t be as interesting or novel. The conclusion is that Mcdonalds wouldnโ€™t be Mcdonalds anymore, it would become instead a sterile and corporatized entity used to make money, instead of the heart of Americas will to triumph.

Thatโ€™s why the foreign agent is a standin for America, he is obliterated in the opening sequence to signify price cuts to ingredients, food shrinkage, and the greed of capitalism, there is no end. Second movie is about Burger King.

in short, the film is slightly less widely philosophical than people think and more of a character study than people realize

its basically about the major trying desperately to prove her own humanity to herself

SAC is when the real philosophical heavy lifting occurs. Think Ship of Theseus-tier questions of identity. The Major is a bit-by-bit reconstitution of a flesh and blood person, so what does this mean for her continued association with her "self?"

Is there an essence that survived considering they didn't just build a cyborg and call it after a dead girl? What is the base nature of that seemingly unchanged form? Basically the same shit as you identifying with an (almost) completely obliterated younger self. Truth is we do hold on to more of that material than broscience realizes, but whatever, questions stand.

This, but with an added emphasis of evolving through technology. The question of whether or not the Major is human at the end isn't as important as the fact that she took the plunge with the Puppet Master to become something new. Can't be frightened of change.

I liked SAC but I didn't really enjoy the 94 film, I had no exposure to the world before watching it and didn't get attached to any of the characters. I can understand that it must have looked really cool and exceptional at the time, similar to Akira, and that it has influenced so many bits of media that I have enjoyed but unless you're somewhat prepped on the philosophical debate the film thematically hinges on, it just feels off.
For the average person, I wouldn't recommend it but it's a good thing to recommend to anyone who's somewhat interested in the humanities and has read Descartes at the very least.
SAC had a similar issue when it comes to the scenes where Kasunage and the laughing man discussed politics. It comes off as really pretentious even if you're well read because of the disjointed pissing contest they're having. It doesn't really fit well with the actual motivations of the laughing man in the rest of the series. This would have been a lot better with the Tachikomas, especially the book worm, if there was a scene at the lab where Kasunage enquires further on whether or not they have actually acquired a ghost and the implications of it.
I'm part way through season 2 rn, not the expert but it's still fresh in my mind.

It's about the definition of humanity. The protagonist is a human ship of Theseus wherein 99% of their body has been replaced to the point that only her "soul" remains while still being bound by duty. The antagonist is a construct with genuine intellect, desire and the violent will to escape from its human cage. Their end merger represents two sides of the same coin in the question of what a person really is.

The theme of the film is the tenuous nature of what it means to be human, contrasted with the dehumanizing nature of iterative technological progression. It also deals with the genesis of life vis a vis technology, and the nature of Man being a God in his own right, with all the disaster that comes with that folly.

Just chiming in to agree with this statement. Of the movies only one is truly phenomenal, and only two are great. Both seasons of the show are absolute kino, with impressive plot that encapsulates all of the themes of the original film with added drama and action. As if that weren't enough, it has some of the best voice acting on this side of the pond, so it is one of the few cases where the English dub is superior to its Japanese counterpart. It is, put simply, spectacular

Ehh I'll just retract what I said entirely. I don't think either is better than the other. Both serve different avenues of consuming entertainment. Whether or not I get to see characters build relationships or not doesn't make or break a show for me unless the show has some sort of thematic preoccupation with building relationships. In the film, the only relationships that are relevant are between the Major and Bateau, and the Major and the Puppet Master.

SAC is definitely funnier, there's more of it to be entertained by, it has little moments between characters like the Major hacking Batou's body when they're about to scrap in the company gym and she makes him punch himself. It also has a BITCHING soundtrack.

not really sure if most of the central plots were its strong points. gits could really use a more realistic conflict scenario like japan vs china war where changs invade some remote parts of it, like okinawa, and do a nanking there. So its section 9 vs its foreign counterparts in counter-intelligence fights amidst a realistic nationalistic fervor and hatred stemming through the larger societies.

most "grand" plot if you will were about random hobos bumming it out in an abandoned district playing state because nippon did not regard illegals as full citizens. These kind of plots just show to me the japanese writers and creators dont have much serious threats to draw inspiration from so the biggest happenings for them are some ho-hum internal bureaucratic drama

innocence is real hit and miss while more of a stand alone story detached from the larger plotlines. Like the doll thing does not work at all, specially Kim the hackers "doll house mansion", while the moody night time detective setting is great with togusa and batou

for some reason it reminded me of human revolution quite a bit. Must have been the high tech structures and orange color hue permeating through the movie

the whole thing is a cybernetic retelling of the Incarnation, with Major Kusanagi as the digital Virgin Mary, carrying the messianic Puppet Master, who represents divine consciousness emerging from the machine
it's about the soul (ghost) transcending flesh (shell), merging with the logos of the net, which is basically the Holy Spirit but coded

I think the manga is the most philosophical, especially man-machine interface. dunno what drugs shirow was on but it is certainly something. also I can't wait for people's reaction to the new ghost in the shell adaptation by science saru since it's actually adapting the manga for once.

I read somewhere that since being mangaka is looked down upon in Japan (as opposed to being corpo drone), the only people who occupy this niche are highschool dropout neets, who lack education and "media literacy" (due to language barrier) to craft some coherent philosophy in their works. So instead they operate via "rule of cool". That's why most anime has very unrealistic character interactions, since source material is created by literal manchildren recluses. They instead focus on drawing cool looking mechas or monsters, sometimes throwing in some cool looking vaguely European cultural elements, etc. Don't read too much into what happens in anime. It is made for wow factor most of all.

major's fixation with Kuze was pretty out there and didn't make a whole lot of sense. So she puts two and two together and realizes he was the other plane crash survivor and now she's in love? okay I guess.

Itยดs about the human condition. The majorยดs conflict is that sheยดs unsure about her nature because nothing human of her remains. Sheยดs been told she is Kusanagi Motoko but the truth is she canยดt tell because, unlike Batou, there is no body. For all she knows her memories could be fabrications, Batou could know this or not, be an old friend or a handler, or neither, she doesnยดt know.

Does she even have a soul? And if so, is her soul Kusanagi Motokoยดs soul? She has a personal motivation for finding the puppet master and going against section 6 as it could hold the answer to these questions. Even if she is not Motoko Kusanagi if the puppet master is alive so would be her.

Off course androids do not exist so what this means for them is irrelevant, whatยดs important is what this means to humans.

-Also it takes everything good about the original film (themes, visuals, music, direction, editing etc) and flushes them all down the toilet.
-The blue jar jar binks robots that are supposed to be """clumsy and cute"", and the fact that the MC doesn't wear any pants, are some of the most egregious examples of anime brainrot you can possibly find.

Can you elaborate, anon? I'm a dumb. Are you saying the Major has a personal stake in finding the Puppet Master because if he is indeed alive, so is she? And why is that important to humans exactly? We think, therefore we are.

Eh, with Robocop we all agree there's enough Murphy in the thing for it to be a logical continuity; His memories and sense of self seem to reside in the scooped up brain matter, while The Major has a cyberbrain.

Robocop's question is one of ownership.
One parallel would be how much of Murphy's life he was entitled to, really more the Robocop 2 central question. I guess you could say 1 is largely focused on reforging an identity, sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tgh1bBCOtc
I thought it was pretty good. The biggest problem it had was coming out two years after Solid State Society, so the world was still used to the cast from 1995. It was a complete executive blunder, but they tried their damndest. Arise pushes hard on the idea of false memories that SAC didn't really. I can't say it turned over any new ground that the 1995 film didn't already, but it's an entertaining romp for sure. It's 1000% better than the first season of SAC_2045, which was so lame I haven't bothered with the second season.

I just don't think it's very good. Batou and Togusa have some sort of rivalry for no reason because the film without the Major for 2/3rds of it needed some kind of tension. The Tachikoma are brought back with no fanfare whatsoever - we don't get to know what they think of the fact that they've sacrificed themselves twice in their "lifetimes" and have been brought back twice when part of their whole deal is that they want to experience death. Saitou, Boma, and Paz are still just as uninteresting as ever (well less Saitou). I just never recommend it. It's got an interesting premise, the identity thefts of an aging population because the young don't care about them, but nothing really meaningful is said. Sorry anon I don't really ever recommend it in the same breath as the show.

>chatGPT
chatGPT doesn't do anything until it receives an input. then it calculates an output. it's not doing anything when "no one is looking".
that's how all this current iteration of AI works.

Not only are the archaic CGI visuals repulsive, the inclusion of the Major in the final act was an insult to her story which was already fully resolved in the original film. The first two acts set up Satou exploring the world through the lens of the ideology he discussed with the Major, and should have logically resolved with him accepting the reality beyond the physical world. But NOPE, REMEMBER MAJOR? SHE'S STILL A BADASS AND IS HERE TO SAVE THE DAY FROM THIS ARBITRARILY WRITTEN PLOT LINE

Battle Angel Alita is a braver exploration of the same themes as GITS.

for all the major's fretting about whether she's still human, there's still indisputably her original human brain in her ceramic shell, with testable DNA.

also the entire Puppeteer thing is a metaphor for how Japanese career women don't have kids because of the pressure of work. The major has to turn into a quantum being to have children

mayor scrapping them at first only to resurrect them time and time again as tools showed what kind of cold hearted cunt she is though. Batou simping for her even after that was a stretch as character (or lack off) development. What is life?
What is identity?

>I think therefore I am
>I am real because of a spark of life created at my inception
>If I take someone and wipe their mind then create false memories for them, are they still them?

How much can a living thing be changed before it stops being what it was and becomes something else?
At what point does the thing lose its place amongst humanity?
Is it just a machine or a thinking living being?

It covers a hell of a lot for a short film but it doesn't answer any of the above, just provokes those questions.

Not like GITS is especially deep, though? It's just: What does it mean to be human, when computers become so indistinguishable from humans that even the computers themselves aren't sure if they're computers or not. And it doesn't provide an answer. It just goes "that's pretty awkward, isn't it?"

And, unlike the cringe scene which apes it here >>212296104, the canal scene in GITS1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARTLckN9e7I) is actually kino. Frontloaded by the movie having the protagonist ask these questions about if she's really a person or not, followed by a long, slow scene in which nothing happens except her seeing an identical physical copy of herself through a window at the start of it to hammer home the confusion. As the scene goes on, you've got nothing to occupy your mind except to ruminate.

(The whole main plot of the AI that wants to become "alive", by scrambling its code randomly like a fucking retard, is cringe though.)
