Gi-hun, previously seen sacrificing himself for the child Season 3 and presumed dead by some , is revealed to be alive. His sacrifice has left him paralyzed and with severe memory loss. Now, under the manipulation of the Front Man and others in power, Gi-hun is molded into the new Host, unknowingly presiding over the very horrors he once fought to destroy.
As a new batch of players enters the Games with their own motivations and backstories, the season explores themes of identity, manipulation, and whether evil is born—or made.
Episode 1 – "Ashes of the Past"
Opens with flashbacks of Gi-hun’s fall — mysterious and ambiguous. He awakens in a lavish medical suite, paralyzed, disoriented, and without memory. Introduced to a woman claiming to be his "handler," who tells him he was in a terrible accident and is now part of a “global program.” Cut to new players being recruited—debt-ridden, desperate, and suspicious of rumors about survivors of previous Games.
Final scene: Gi-hun, dressed in red and gold, watches surveillance footage from a mechanical wheelchair. He doesn't remember why he feels disturbed.
Episode 2 – "Welcome to the Games"
The new contestants arrive at the island.
The new Game Master (masked Gi-hun) makes his first speech, his voice altered and cold. Some old staff members are uneasy—Front Man tells them, “He’s not who he was.”
First game: A violent twist on Musical Chairs — tension ramps up.
One of the contestants, a former detective, is secretly investigating the Games and spots inconsistencies in the Host’s behavior.
Episode 3 – "Fragments"
Gi-hun experiences flashes of memories — his daughter, Il-nam, the red hair.
Begins to question his role and asks his handler, “Have I done something bad?”
Flashbacks reveal the Front Man saved Gi-hun to use him as a symbolic successor—“a player turned host” — poetic and cruel. Meanwhile, alliances form between players, and the pressure intensifies.
