sometimes I feel like American Dad has the only people who know how to be funny
it feels so divorced from our shitty, overly politicized world, even though they sometimes make reference to current things.
it's got a unique sensibility to its humor. you can wrap that sensibility around anything and it will come out good
remember in the van life episode when Jeff tells Hayley to rap her feelings? imagine any show other than AD having a scene where a characters RAPS their FEELINGS.
or the scene where Stan and Roger are catatonic and Francine puts on Butterfly by Crazy Town and then Stan and Roger start dancing and rapping along with it except it didn't happen. I fucking hate that song, but I regularly pull that scene up on youtube.

Even the worst American Dad episode has at least one genuinely hilarious moment.

it did amuse me how the show started making fun of itself and commenting on how every side character was always Roger

Every cartoon comedy eventually devolves into just being a commentary on current events (and in the case of Futurama reboots, 5 year old events). American Dad is the one that has managed to avoid falling into that trap which is why it's the GOAT

Once the original theme of parodying Bush era politics was dropped, the show was finally allowed to grow and use its zany cast of characters in a more outlandish unconventional way. What I love most about American Dad is how fleshed out all the main characters have become and how well the audience understands the different dynamics between the whole family. Feels like you em a little bit.

One of those little things I love about American Dad is that it fleshes out these random ass side characters for no reason. Like the guy who makes all of his bagels by hand and beats Stan up for Rebecca, his queen. Or the Italian guy at the resort who's wife breaks up with him and he curses Giuseppe. Or fucking Jenny. No other show does it like they do, where I get heavily invested in a character for like two jokes and then they never bring them up again.

It's hilarious.

>it's got a unique sensibility to its humor
I was trying to articulate this to a friend awhile back and I couldn't quite put my finger on it exactly, but I think I know what that humor is now. I think it's the willingness to mine the mundane silly little jokes we make in every day life that we deep down know are too silly to really share with people, or conversely too dark. Stuff like the silly pet names or baby talk we come up with. Like that whole maybe-baby bit, or saying someone's name in a funny way, like Stoive. And on the flip side there's those weird bits like Francine feeding Hayley chocolate or maybe it's poop. But no it's chocolate. Or anytime Stan just overshares or thinks about murdering anyone or even himself. These things aren't all necessarily "taboo" subjects, they're more just weird half-formed concepts where if you tried to bring them up in actual conversation people would just look at you like, "wtf?" And before anyone writes off what I'm saying as "stoner" humor, I gotta mention I don't even touch the stuff, and what I specifically think of when I think of this humor is a friend of mine playing with his cat. Grown man just playing with her rubbing her belly, forgot I was there. Out of nowhere in real high voice he just starts singing her name, Kitty Kelly. Just a real earnest silly moment, but when he noticed I was there he just said "shut up" and pretended like nothing happened. Just those kind of private little moments that everyone thinks are weird but at the same time everyone has them, I think that's what makes the show and the characters endearing and that extra bit more hilarious.

This show was supposed to political satire. The bigoted neocon father vs the smart liberal daughter. But they quickly abandoned that premise. It ended up just flamboyant alien silliness

I think you hit the nail on the head with this and in-jokes between friends. Makes the characters much more likeable.

Why is AD funny while Family Guy is shit?

Because of who is at the helm.

American Dad began as Seth's Family Guy replacement, developed during Family Guy's cancellation on Fox. He was particularly salty over George Bush and the Religious Right at the time so decided to make a giant soapbox show lashing out at it. This is why nearly all of season 1's 13 episodes were politically focused.

However shortly before season 1 premiered, Family Guy was renewed at Fox after years of successful reruns on Adult Swim. Seth lost interest in American Dad almost immediately as he saw FG as the greater cash cow, and dropped out of all writing and production of the show to focus on family guy EXCEPT the voices. He put Family Guy writer Matt Weitzmann in charge of American Dad's writing and production.

Under Weitzmann, the show took a drastically different direction. Weitzmann was never interested in the political aspect, and wanted to make a "Screwball sitcom" in his own words. In particular, the dynamic of Roger and his many disguises were what interested Weitzmann. Not wanting to alienate existing audiences, Weitzmann decided to only "phase out" political episodes, which were all but gone by season 3. Over time, Weitzmann's influence has gotten stronger and stronger now American Dad is more focused on bizarre situations, Roger's personas, and the characters.

what a missed opportunity. instead we get fag shenanigans done thru the lens of an "alien" that stopped being interesting after the second episode they did it in
