do-you-think-superman-can-stand-its-own-with-these-two-v0-clet8cn05old1
Since Jurassic World got a B Cinema Score and awful reviews, we all know the week 2 drop is going to be atrocious.
So is Superman now the clear front runner for the biggest movie of the summer? I still don't think it beats Minecraft's opening weekend, but the fact that Jurassic is probably going to get like a 60% or even 70% drop has me wondering.

It's between Superman and F4 now. Superman's issue is the presales for it have started to slow, so we'll have to wait until the weekend to see if they pick up again. Could also possibly see a Shazam 1 situation where walk-ups are a lot stronger that typical CBM stuff because of how hard they're marketing towards families/children with the dog. Movie is going to live or die based on reviews/Word of mouth.

F4 just needs to not be total shit since it already has strong presales, but all Marvel movies tend to have decent opening weekends its the falloff that kills them if they're bad.

It's tricky to make predictions on pre sales since Superman's Tuesday previews are messing things up. Pre sales are all estimates based on the small proportion of people who buy tickets more than a week in advance, and a major data point difference like half of your Thursday crowd seeing it a different day throws those guesses off even more

Insiders are thinking of it in those terms.
People are already expecting it to do well in the first weekend but it's gonna grow and grow.

I think no film will hit a billion until fall.

I see Superman hit 900 million

Jurassic around 750 million

And F4 around 680 million

Superman success is dependent on reviews and word of mouth, the hype is there though

That too, and like I said it's very possible this movie has stronger appeal more with families/not adult manchildren given how hard they're marketing the super puppy and making it seem more kid friendly. Really I think it's just impossible to predict Superman until it actually comes out. Predictions have been all over the place with the most insane ranges. Will live or die on if it's actually appealing to people at all.

Gareth Edwards. same dude that made a Godzilla movie where Godzilla doesn't appear until the final 10 minutes of the movie and hypes up Bryan Cranston straight off the hype of Breaking Bad only to kill him off in the first 20 minutes. I have no idea how this hack keeps getting work. His only successful movie was the one where he got fired halfway through and had someone else come in to fix it.

There are no new Bond stories.

There are no new Star Wars stories left to tell.

There are no new Marvel Universe stories left to tell.

There are no new DC Universe stories left to tell

The international box office for Superman will be much higher than Blandtastic Bore because nobody has a sub to places that will stream for free, outside of America. Nobody goes to the Cinema for "original" Disney/Pixar/MCU films these days as you get it as part of your D+ sub in a few months so you don't have to spend cinema money on something you might not like.

JP will do 600 on a good day. It has the bonus of being the first of those three in a month, so someone on a budget will watch the first one. It's not a good movie, word of mouth won't help it and the reviews aren't good.
Sups might do 500. At least it sort of looks like a superhero movie, there hasn't been much DC lately and it's not like people are saving for FF.
FF will do 400 tops. If Cap4 can't even do it, why should FF. The trailer looks desaturated, FF historically never did well, not everyone likes the 60s look and the story is a bland rehash.

No clue, Cinemascore is based on them polling audience members after seeing it. Guess people just liked more of the dinosaur action and original cast in that one. Even the RT audience score for Dominion is higher than Rebirth.

These are the worst examples to use because they both had nostalgia pandering though the roof. Superman has no nostalgia so you can't compare it with Force awakens which at least had Han and Chewy and Top Gun being a sequel from the 80s. Superman looks like its going to flop because of the slow pre sales and general Capeshit fatigue plus Gunn isn't doing anything new or exciting.

Cinemascore is based off audience polling, it's not like them personally ranking it. It tends to be inflated for crowd pleasing movies and deflated for horror.

Elio got an A because it's mostly little kids and their parents seeing it.

Megan 2 probably got a B+ because it really wasn't -that- bad, and the only people who saw it were big fans since it bombed so hard.

Same with Thunderbolts and all MCU properties. An A- is actually a mediocre score for an MCU movie, it's with movies like Thor 2, Captain America 1, Ant-Man 2, Black Widow etc.

Essentially if it's a crowd pleasing Summer blockbuster the scale is A+ is amazing, A is good, A- is middling, B+ is bad, and B is awful.

Exactly, that's why it getting a B is so bad. You'd expect it to get an A- or A at least. The fact that it's doing that and the fanboys are coming out saying "eh it's a B" is not a good sign.

That's why the only good metric is the box office. Opening weekend, drop to second weekend. Those are the only real values.

I doubt Superman is gonna excel here. Opening weekend might be ok, but it's not a movie that's gonna stick around. If anything it will have bad word of mouth.

true, but cinemascore is generally a decent, but imperfect predictor of legs due to audience reception and word of mouth. I have no clue how Superman will do. for WB it surely is, it being the start of a new era. if it does poorly, so will the following movies based on the new DCU.
it's downright impossible that it will do so well that people are optimistic about the upcoming DC movies.

it's at least better than a single biased reviewer, bought reviews or online 10/10 voters who haven't seen a movie.

People are 100% unironically over superhero movies. They have no appeal anymore, its tired and stale. The MCU is not only dead but the stink is beginning to become actually repellant to people, and nobody born after the 1950's actually likes Superman. The trailers for neither movie look particularly good. I would be willing to bet Jurassic World and F1 beat them both at the box office.

I'd say people are over bad superhero movies. Which one of those recent flops was an actually good movie?

>Phase Five (2023-2024)
>Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (February 17, 2023)
Mid
>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023)
Was quite good
>The Marvels (November 11, 2023)
Utter trash
>Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26, 2024)
Good. Not really MCU though and that's why it was good.
>Captain America: Brave New World (February 14, 2025)
Bad.
>Thunderbolts (May 2, 2025)
You thought it couldn't get any worse?

>Phase Six (2025-2027)
>The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025)
Looks like the recent bad movies.

Then you have trash like Joker 2 and none of the recent DC movies were any good. Plus movies in general not being good anymore.

It wasn't that uncommon for an MCU movie to be less than 2 hours in phase 1, but in recent times it usually means the movie was cut down to get more opening weekend showings before the word of mouth turns bad. In this case though I think it might be because of the short post production of the film and this was literally all the usable footage they could finish.

you have to adjust it for movies that are a similar genre. for example a MCU movie getting a B is terrible, while a horror movie getting a B is alright. Kids/family/crowd pleasing blockbusters are inflated while slower, more serious dramas and horror movies are deflated.
