Let's be honest, when you take off the nostalgia glasses the Tim Burton movie was far better than the original, and Johnny Depp played Wonka a thousand times better.
The only people who say otherwise are old boomers who just like Gene Wilder, despite the whole film being an inferior product.

The dude lived in a factory alone with his only "friends" a group of midgets who randomly break out into song.
Yeah, I think he'd be a little socially awkward after years of that. Johnny Depp accurately portrayed that, even using note cards to show how unprepared he is for human interaction when he greets the family when they arrived.

Gene Wilder's character just feels like kind of a zaney asshole, Depp's character feels completely alien and bizarre, and genuinely mentally unwell. Some people (me included) prefer Depp's, some prefer Gene's. there is no right answer.

Gene Wilder is the GOAT. Maybe I'm just the old boomer the OP mentioned but I think the Johnny Depp version sucked a bag of dicks. I've only watched it once and I was bored. Meanwhile I've watched the original probably 30 times. It never gets old. It's a timeless classic.

The Johnny Depp version uses the songs from the book while the Gene Wilder version made up its own, but it’s still worse as a movie.
