smiling friends is one of the only ‘ugly’ adult animated shows that manages to be pleasant to look at. shit like squidbillies, big mouth, mr pickles, rick and morty, aqua teen, etc. are varying degrees of repulsive without much charm, visually. you can tell theres a real attempt with smiling friends at least

"CalArts style" initially referred to the animation style used in movies like the Iron Giant. Since then it's been re-appropriated by idiots like OP to basically just refer to any frequently used cartoon style they don't like

I appreciate western animation's willingness to swing for the fences. Most anime plays it too safe and winds up with boring looking characters. Even "bean mouth Cal Arts" is more interesting looking than the majority of modern anime, if anything it hearkens back to the style of early DragonBall and other 80s/early 90s Japanese children's anime mixed with western cartooning ideas.

same reason why you'll never have a mature western animation film be a blockbuster in cinemas and then sweep the award shows , like they do in Japan or in other countries.

Same reason why 90 years of comic book franchises -had- to be adapted into live action movies, and the animation films/series have to be on like Fox Kids on Saturday morning and direct to VHS.

Same reason why even "mature" animation in the west is just them saying fuck and shit and having ironic fart jokes about current events.

Animation in the west is forever seen as media for children, we rarely call it animation it's always just "cartoons" which is what 99.99% it is. There will never be a western version of Guts or Baki or Grave of the Fireflies or Demon Slayer or Kimi No Na Wa or Spirited Away.

Lord knows there will be plenty of attempts at live action adaptations, especially on neflix, cause that's all we're good for.

And to be clear I absolute love (some) western cartoons like especially 1990s Simpsons and the original run of King of The Hill as well as early Family Guy as well as Futurama and something like Clone High or Home Movies. They're all excellent sitcoms though, where obviously it's all about the humor and not so much displaying animation as an art form. It's timeless (mostly) flawless humor though. I'll happily rewatch all those over something like Friends or Seinfeld.

Klasky Csupo was started by eastern european immigrants, if you know anything about animation you can see that same aesthetic in a bunch of Russian/Ukranian and other post-soviet bloc countries' animation output during the 90s.
