I was in high school around that time and everybody loved watching TV shows and movies since internet streaming was barely a thing then. Maybe you're thinking about video games? Xbox 360 released in 2005 and became the "gamer bro" console. The original Xbox still had too much nerdy Japanese stuff on it, which was why it is basically a Dreamcast 2.
