Yeah. Still amazing that they made it, truly a Faustian production. Couple more years and it would have been entirely CGI

The stuff they cut out and had planned and edited turner it from a 9/10 to 6 for!10.
There was a lot more backstory. Ice Asteroids that had broken up hit the earth but mostly melted cause tsunamis but raised the sea level. It was something like. 1/10 the size of the moon Asteroids that had just become mostly small dust. Anyways it flooded everything. Some people stayed on the bottom around nuclear plants and subs your. You see hints of it and some of them were creating Kevin kostner like people and weird giant fish and fauna to create continents out of carcassayse.

If they made the pre planned sequel they would have gone to the seabed people then to the people left in space stations. It was all planned out.

Yeah, the sets and props are good but everything else sucks. The story is pretty garage, the music is generic, the tone is all over, the performances are all bad. Just not a good movie.

That doesn't make it terrible at all. It makes the people who manage the budget terrible at their jobs. The movie was great for what it was. It was their fault for overblowing the expected audience attendance and consequently making the budget enormous. Same shit that's happening now when they use 600 million with advertising to make a movie then blame the audience for not turning out enough for them to make a profit.

>It was a disaster at the box office
It actually wasn't.
In fact, if you read contemporary reviews, you will quickly realise a whole lot of made-up shit was sticked to this movie for no apparent reason. It's almost as if everyone and their dog had a stake to pretend this movie both sucks and lost money, and neither is true.

Friendly reminder the reason the budget exploded was majority of their shit being destroyed by a hurricane. So at this point they faced a choice: declare 60 million loss, OR start from a scratch and keep filming, while rebuilding all sets from scratch.

That's cool, Costner's character evolving gills really strained disbelief since IIRC, there is living memory of land. And they still have cigs, so it can't be that long since inundation. That part about genetically engineered leviathans meant to become continents is *insanely* cool, source? Almost too cool for film, how would you ever get a proper sense of scale, or even introduce something like that?

it has a few decent set pieces and action scenes, but getting yet another "Kevin Costner is the messiah" story that drags on for 45 minutes longer than it should makes is really tough to get through

i'd take an original production with loads of practical effects over anything today, even if the story wasn't that great. water world makes up for it in set and setting.

Kevin Costner is unlikeable in this film, the kid is incredibly annoying and the love interest looks ugly. Everything else is pretty solid.

I can’t believe it wasn’t actually Jean Triplecorn’s ass in that one deriving scene. Are there just people on hand who are for-hire nude doubles? That’s definitely somebody’s mom now , and she’s not telling anybody about it.

What with this and the Maze Runner Scorch Trials thread you guys are reading my mind, I was just thinking about shitty post apocalyptic worldbuilding (As I always am)
I think the creators of these projects lose the plot and forget why the fuck they're even writing. Post apocalypse is fun because camping is fun. The fantasy is that you'd get to camp and like hew wood all day every day. Unless your post apocalypse is a world entirely covered with water or some retarded maze full of cyborg monsters. Then what's even the point?
