It's Japan's fault. They hoard all their media and try to charge as much as possible for them, domestic and internationally. Their music industry is particularly backwards, forcing fans to join vip clubs just to view online images of artists. Japan is kind of their own world whereas Korea is far more westernized

Japan has been stagnating for the last 25 years.
They always say "But that's how we've always done it! It's tradition! Please understand!", but in reality it's an excuse for laziness.
Japan used to push art and tech like crazy, but the their success left them greedy, lazy and stagnant.
You can see a prime example of this if you look at their video game industry. Minimum amount of effort, never pushing or striving for greater things, all under the excuse of "it's always been like this, that's how it's supposed to be"

And then they get shocked/bitter/angry/surprised when Korea overtakes them in pretty much every field.
Korea has been way better at adapting their stuff to have a more global appeal, where Japan, for better and worse, is always just extremely "Japanese".

They've simply been resting on their laurels for WAY too long. It's time to fucking wake up and put in some effort again.

Japanese art/media/culture is very "Japanese" no matter what, while Korea has been way better at packaging their stuff in a way foreigners can get into much easier, even with the language barrier.
And then Japanese people get pissed because Korea is getting more recognition while they keep stagnating.
A great example is the difference between Parasite and Shoplifters.
They're more or less the exact same movie in terms of the characters and how the plot evolves, but one of them only got a little international recognition and the other won an Oscar.

Japan hasn't kept up in the last 25 years.
