I honeslty can't imagine why he wouldn't be brought back though, he was immensely popular and beloved by all in his role as Morpheus.

They were probably told not to touch him. They could likely make an entire spinoff show or movie just about his character. Why waste him on a crappy cash grab movie everyone knows will likely be a waste of time. Besides he's got a full slate of stuff on his plate already

There's a theory you no doubt heard that suggests whats-her-name intentionally torpedoed the film to, err, "save" the franchise from future installments of mediocrity. If true, her fondness for Fishburne and Weaving would lead her to say "Hey, uh, maybe it's best if you guys keep your distance from this rancid meat pile". She couldn't do the same for the two leads because they would've been in the movie with or without her.

But, who the fuck knows. I just know that if I were in her shoes and wanted to protect my "baby" from studio fuckery, the last thing I'd do is put out a flaming shitpile and fuck my own legacy.

Extrapolating from matrix 4, I would say they wanted to make a movie in which Neo was crazy and actually never went to the matrix and it was all a dream, trinity didn't exist, and it was just him all along. Possibly having a black kid helping him recover, or hinting that his crazy can be passed on and there could be other Neos or a new girl with his crazy or something they can do with new actors.
Because the movie is the complete opposite, it reinforces the matrix, confirms that everything was real and happened, that all the characters were real and the end is open for more "matrix" storyline and hard to bounce back into something else.

Because even though Larry is crazy, he still had artistic standards and creative integrity. His story ended. It's finished. They spent years meticulously and thoroughly planning out everything in the matrix trilogy, animatrix, the games, etc. It's some of the most work put into a film series and rarely done these days. The story they wanted to be done was told and done. Now you want to tell him some other jackass should come in decades later, pick it up, crap out some fanfiction slop to justify continuing it for a dozen more sequels? It completely shits on everything they did and tarnishes the legacy far more than putting out a single sequel telling fans "sorry, but we were forced to do this"

Tyson says there that he quibbles with The Matrix because the machines could just use the food they feed the humans as a power source instead of feeding it to them and suffering energy loss having humans convert it. I don't think it was a power plant though, Morpheus even says he doesn't really know, he saw the fields but he doesn't actually know for sure what the fuck the machines are doing. I think it was actually a server farm. Human brains are powering the matrix.
