Its value is in having a dedicated fall guy in case of lawsuit. If someone makes up some bullshit then it's the coordinator who gets blamed. The studio can fire and blacklist them and claim they fixed the problem.

Well in all fairness, as silly as the idea is... would it not be a good thing?

Sure modern 'sex scenes' are shit.... but at least 20-40 years down the line, you can have these women bitch and complain about how the director forced them to do reshoots until it was sexy enough, then write a 'Tell-All' book about how they were indirectly raped during a film...

...with a coordinator, at least it having some kind of "OSHA" rep to manage the scene would absolve the studio from any future liability.
