>“One of the only times an actor influenced a change in the script, and it wasn’t even their line,” Imperioli began, setting up the moment. “Makazian [John Heard] didn’t like Paulie. In the original script, he said he didn’t like Paulie. ‘Paulie was a bully.’ Tony Sirico read that and was horrified and was very angry that Paulie was labeled a bully. [He] went to [episode writer] Frank [Renzulli], maybe David [Chase], and said, ‘Paulie is not a bully! I don’t like this!’ So they took it into consideration, thought about it, and said, ‘How about psycho?’ And Tony Sirico said, ‘Fine.'”
>Another popular anecdote floating around for years is that Sirico agreed to do the series as long as Paulie never became a “rat,” aka government informant, as the actor had a criminal past and took the issue seriously. It seems that is most likely accurate, as Schirripa noted that Sirico said, “I’ll never play a rat.”
he was too sensitive an actor to be a main character with depth

yes exactly, that's what we're discussing here. tony sirico had a moral code that he could portray all those things, but not a character who'd turn on his crew for the cops. in a show where like 1 in 4 characters is an informant, that limits the storylines you can be in
I'm not joking about that iq test, it would clarify some things for you

remind me kike, was sirico ever an informant? would you say he held by his principles and was never portrayed as a zograt, or was he a bottom dweller like yourself? he clearly had a line he would never cross, a rarity in jew run hollywood. why are you so anxious to besmirch him i wonder?

why do tony sirico's principles say it's fine to portray a character who kills an innocent old woman so he can steal her life's savings. why couldn't he be even less jewish and be principled enough to avoid depicting that, or is not smothering grannies jewish behavior? I fail to see how selling out tony and the nj crew to johnny sack is any more ethical than selling them out to the police
if michael imperioli was a teetotaler who didn't ever want to be shot drinking alcohol, if van zandt didn't want silvio to be seen abusing women, the scriptwriters are unlikely to give them as much airtime because they lack the freedom to write the arcs they want. why did you like the sopranos, why did you watch the sopranos?

Had Paulie's principles ever really been tested though? You could say Phil's were. He sucked up 20 years because being a rat was worse, but Tony's guys never did serious time like that. Paulie's only ever seen doing a short term bid he knew he'd beat. If he faced a RICO indictment he might rat. It's easy to talk about not being a rat when you're not facing football numbers.

Paulie was more attuned to spirituality, so there was an opportunity there. I have no doubt he's currently standing on his head in purgatory, while Tony is watching himself get shot in front of his family, in hell, nightly
