The Babadook is actual mental illness kino. I don't like when horror movies do the whole "she was just insane" thing but Babadook isn't really like that imo, because the character actually acts the way insane people do. It's not just a cop-out for spooky stuff happening.

Agreed. The director Jennifer Kent learned under Lara Von Trier as a production assistant on Dogville. Her films are great although she leans heavily into melancholy/evil even moreso than LVT with his films
