The main guy barely spoke a word during the entirety of season 3, he might as well have not been there at all. And since 99% of the drama and story of both seasons 2 and 3 revolved entirely around characters who all die, this was a truly massive waste of time. The end of season 2 with him overtaking the guards and staging a coup was the only point at which this show showed genuine promise of not being a rehash and advancing the plot in a meaningful direction, and instead it gets brushed aside immediately and reset to status quo of idiots playing the stupid games and betraying each other.

This should never have gone past the first season.

But as I began writing the story, and as I began to think more and more about, “What do I want to deliver with the ending of this story?” And also, “What should Gi-hun’s journey and what should his destination be?” I was witnessing more and more what was happening around the world and I thought it was more fitting for Gi-hun to send this powerful and impactful message to the world [with his death] and that should be how the story comes to a close.

Season 1 is about retaining humanity in the pursuit of personal fulfiment. I didn't understand the attitude of the detective at all during the epilogue. He acted like everything was solved, over and done with. He literally didn't get ONE step closer to his questions.
