>>212340158 (OP)The "missing reel" in Death Proof is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen a filmmaker do. So because apparently, anecdotally, some grindhouse movies back in the 1970s has missing reels, either due to incompetence or because the guy running the projector would keep the reel with the sex scenes/sell it for porn. Oh, so that means that every movie doing a tribute to grindhouse has to pay tribute to this incompetence?
With Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, at least it made sense as a goofy gimmick. He cuts out when Freddy Rodriguez and Rose McGowan's sex scene is beginning, then cuts to the third act when these characters are in a situation we don't understand. That's the point though. He didn't even film the "missing" reel. The audience is supposed to be confused and we know it. That's actually kind of fun.
With QT's missing reel, however, he films more of his self-indulgent dialogue with the characters just at a bar talking, "cuts" it when they're still talking, then comes back with the characters leaving the bar. We're not that confused for missing some of the dialogue, the only sex scenes the fictional projectionist would have stolen was a fully clothed lap dance, and he made sure people would get a chance to hear his precious dialogue by releasing a full version.
