Where does this rank among war films, considering it's actually good?
>>212342311 (OP)It's one of the best movies period
>actually good
Turned it off after <30mins
>made up an intro war scene just for muh cycle of violence theme
The novel starts deliberately cheery and happy, with the men returning from the front and having a laugh. This is deliberate, you're supposed to be drawn in, it's offputting and becomes ominous, and then you get the scene where they march back to the front past the dead horses etc. and you see the real horror
>turn the schoolteacher into protohitler
The teacher is jingoistic, but not because muh hitler. He represents the boomer class of the day, who had no idea what the war was like, and passed their stupid opinions like "the boys just need to fight harder!", totally disconnected from the reality of the meat grinder. You see more of this when Paul goes on leave later in the novel, and he's surrounded by adults talking about the war in total ignorance, and how he's unable to express it, and he longs to return to the front to get away from them (and out of his sense of dread). Turning the teacher into protohitler cheapens it
>one of them gets shot in the helmet or something
I was bored of it by this point, they clearly didn't give a shit about the story, they just wanted muh gritty war film with insert scenes of horrific violence here for cheap shock value
One of the great war novels turned into shlock, spare me
The made for TV Ernest Borgnine adaptation is the best version actually.

>tfw you will never gut a Frenchman
>>212344082stick to pol faggot, you didn't even watch the movie
>>212342311 (OP)It was the best war film I've seen in about a decade when I saw it. I don't know why some people here dislike it so fervently.
It wouldn't make my top 10 war film list but it might make the tail end of the top 20 or early top 30.
>>212344182I dissected a few frogs in school, does that count?
>>212342311 (OP)doesn't even compare to Band of Brothers or The Pacific
>>212344195Correct, I watched the first <30mins of it
I have however read the book multiple times
Is it true they cut the scene where they sneak off to shag the french girls? And how they get a taste of the real life that the war has taken from them? And it's brutally sad, and such a vitally important moment in the story for demonstrating that these boys have nothing left but their shambling husks, and they know it and they can't do anything about it, their souls have been ripped from them by the awful carnage. Is it true they cut this bit?
>>212342311 (OP)It had some ok stuff but It's a terrible adaptation of the book, they added shit that shows they didn't understand the point of the source material at all. The fucking namesake of the book is not in the movie.
The one with the walton and ernest borgine shits all over this streamslop. Ending is straight ass no one went to war in the last 5 minutes
