I think the only season i can remember liking besides the first was the one where they're constantly on the road, Rick rips a dudes throat out with his teeth, and Beth dies. That was a kino season.

Because 22 million shitty episodes just aren't enough
terrible show, some of the worst acting and plug-in effects ever
every character is somehow a fucking sharpshooter with ammo cheats, one shot one kill making zombies such a non-threat from the beginning

Because AMC wanted to have a franchise badly, without any clue how to make a franchise and how to build it. Plus they've started about 2 years too late anyway.

This, Lost and House MD are three series that I just don't understand why people go watching when they've managed to dodge the original bullet. Like why would you do that to yourself? Season 3 is more or less where the series peaked. If you won't find it special or good, don't worry - it wasn't. It's just where the series was the best, since season 1 doesn't count (it's effecively a pilot movie cut into episodes). S04 was plateau. Anything after that was just downward spiral, and anything after season 5 is a complete fucking waste of time - but the original hype was so strong, most people didn't realise how bad things are until season 7 started
Also, get used from S03 onaward to not give a single flying fuck about characters and their survival. Anyone who isn't from the original cast is effectively a fodder to be killed the same or next season after the introduction.

tl;dr the series is a trainwreck, and the clumsy attempts at handling it as a franchise made it somehow even worse in retrospect

Ballpark is like this: Governor was the best arc of TWD, both the comics and the series. The series never managed to come up with anything better after Governor. The comics came up with Negan, but post-Negan, it completely shat itself. Technically that was the point where the comics was supposed to end originally, but the series made it crazy popular and bringing loads of money, so it kept going, using the series hype.

I think you're thinking of one of the possible ending ideas kirkman had planned and shared where after rick took over alexandria or whatever, theres a massive timeskip and it pans up to a broken statue of rick with zombies walking everywhere showing that the dead eventually won.
It's very clear that the only reason the comic ended was because they killed carl(despite the comic actually being about him based on it's ending) on the show
