Funnily enough the managerial job that I found the most stressful was the one where I effectively had no responsibilities because corporate didn't allow you to make even the tiniest of discretionary decisions. They just sat in an office and informed you that the spreadsheet said to do 'X' and that there was absolutely no arguing with the spreadsheet. My favorite was a rack of products that sat underneath a heating vent, which ruined all of the product on that rack and you'd end up having to throw it all out. So when I took over I naturally moved the product. Shortly afterwards someone from corporate came in and bitched that the product wasn't in the correct place. I explained why and they still told me to put it back where it 'belonged'. Then a month later I got an angry phone call from the same person demanding to know why we were writing off so much damaged product.

It's getting harder and harder to dodge it. I really like my current position, it's low-stress and it doesn't take a lot of time to be completed every day. You can't explain to these people I don't want to be a manager, I don't want to do stupid reports to be in meetings all day or micromanage people. I don't have a wife to nag me to make more money, leave me alone.

In the flick it wasn't a good idea. He was just going through a midlife crisis. He realised he was deeply unhappy with how with his life. He hated his job. His wife and daughter hated him.

And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?". And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?". And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house". And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

He thought about the last time he remembered being happy. And it was being a teenager. Working a dead-end minimum wage job. Getting high. Bench pressing in his garage. So, he starts doing all that again. But, inevitably. He realises that wasn't the solution.

Following Epicurean philosophy? Find a truly happy person and emulate their life. I don't know. I don't think there is actually a solution. You just feel empty and unhappy with how your life is. Then, when you change it. Get a better job. Get a girlfriend. Whatever. You will realise, that wasn't it. You still feel empty and unhappy. And you do that until you get old and die. You ever watch Mad Men? That why it's so good. It's about that cycle.

That's the exact point in the movie when he realised what he was doing wasn't the solution. He had her. Could've. But, just he thought 'what am I doing'. He got exactly what he thought he wanted. And realised, this was not it.

Spiritual fulfillment through living a good, honest life. Not lying to yourself or others. Balancing work and life. Having creative outlets, hobbies and an appropriate amount of social activity for yourself. Having principles and morals and sticking to them.
Note that all of that requires discipline and sacrifice. By the time a mid-life crisis occurs it is usually too late.

I've talked about wanting a security job watching computers in graveyard hours for years (been a cook and pizza guy for most of my life). Finally I saw a job offer at a hotel and with a dress shirt and some minor experience as a cook at another hotel I managed to get hired and now they've been scheduling me 11pm to 7am shifts where I basically watch the cameras all night and maybe get people pillows and help them with their keycards. Shit is so cash I'm just scared I'm going to fuck it up. Some days I work the swing shift which is a lot of making reservations and checking people in but I figure if I hold it down long enough I can squeeze out more graveyards. I sat on my ass for 6 hours doing jack shit mostly reading, the other night and I had this realization I'd finally attained that "security" job I wanted and I felt nothing but pure happiness. Haven't felt that way since I was high off my ass slinging dough (pizza) with my homies way back but they all got better jobs long before me.

>fast food is zero responsibility/low stress
I had my good days but back at Little Caesars man I worked mornings and if I was unlucky one of my 3 people including me called out and almost never got someone to cover so it'd be me and one tranny or methhead (preferred) to run the whole day which could be brutal and I had to stay an hour late to finish my duties all the time. At another place I worked nights and it would get so busy I'd be going mad trying to make sense of the massive amount of orders we were compiling. These jobs are only low stress for people who are such shitheads that no boss would dare give them real responsibility but I've never been able to fake that

Unironically, I was happiest on minimum wage cleaning hospital surgery theatres. It was peaceful, no one interrupts you, and there's a satisfaction of a job well done.

But I still wouldn't trade financial security for it.

that was my life for a solid year after corporate took over the franchise I middle managed at. They had some ass probably in a foreign country watching us 24/7 and literally calling us to bitch and making a huge list of problems that would get attached to our "user" every single day. Later found out I had a massive list of complaints but we were so shit staffed that they had to put up with my constant disobedience because I was one of like 3 employees who never missed a shift. Surprisingly they never complained about me making my own pizzas to take home every other day

Back in the day fast food places mostly employed high school students and other teens/young adults. The economy wasn't totally fucked so it got them a decent amount of supplemental income and work experience.

So obviously a boomer like him would fondly remember his youth as a fast food worker. It's not that he enjoys the work, it's that it reminds him of a time where he was happier. It's nostalgia.

Back in the 90s we didn't care about money. Things were so good and everything was so cheap, we needed very little of it. We mostly just cared about sticking it to The Man. See also: Office Space and Fight Club.

kek, GenX here (real GenX, born in the late 60s) this anon is right, times were good and jobs were plentiful and things including rent and used cars were cheap so we could indulge in little fantasies like this whole "just quit your job and follow your dreams, bro" genre of flicks

Pretty much this. I remember I used to get by on ยฃ100 a week back in the 90s, and that now is only something like ยฃ800 a month. Just flitting between part-time name-tag shop jobs, spending my days watching films in the living room of a rundown two-bed flat that 4 of us rented out for dirt cheap, drinking and listening to music, random girls from college turning up to chill with us, living on free pizza because one of us worked at the local Domino's, all sharing a single scrapheap banger of a car that we stole petrol for, and going to sleep when the birds started their morning chorus.

>He was getting severance pay
Not exactly. He blackmailed his boss into giving him another year's salary and health benefits in exchange for his silence on the company's misappropriation. End result was much more lucrative than severance would have been for the dismissal of an under-performing employee.

eh, jet lag within the US isnโ€™t hard to deal with unless no one gives you time to sleep. i flew weekly cross country for years and my biggest issue was not being worked to death vs. caring about time zones.
