altogether it was originally supposed to be a way smaller scale story about humans fighting monsters, the mist idea was one of the more nihilistic outcomes - everybody dies, the end.
and only about halfway in with the basement mystery box revealed it turned towards world politics, cycles of violence and warfare, etc.
