>>212376790the basic thing about any alien encounter is that the only noteworthy thing about earth in particular is that it sustains intelligent life
as such every motivation for aliens to visit us directly involves us, and involves us in a way that's not easy for them to replicate
So what do they want from us?
Well option 1 is, they just want to meet us out of sheer curiosity, we might be the first alien culture they meet and they're excited about it, they're also an interstellar species so they don't have to fear us in any realistic way, so they're probably benevolent in this case, and they'll be blatant about arriving
Option 2 is they want to get rid of potential rivals, in which case we will literally never see them coming, they'll just hit us with a couple relativistic projectiles or else if they want to be fancy a Nicoll-Dyson beam equivalent, either way, all life on earth is wiped out before your brain can process what happened
Option 3 is they want to study us without meeting, in which case we won't notice they exist at first, however eventually we will still make contact because an interstellar species like this will have trillions of people, so if even 0.01% of them feels guilty about not sharing their tech with us, that's still millions of them working towards getting even a single technological ark through, and not care about remaining secret in this, and they'll eventually succeed or else the means by which they are stopped are apparent to us
Option 4 is we're their entertainment, be it sadistic or otherwise, but that plays out much like option 3, it's just not feasible to have an interstellar species like that without deviant thought
There's a lot of things they won't come for, slaves for example make no sense or really anything that involves abducting us, they'll have robots for that or the ability to just grow humans from tissue samples
