Honestly, to me, its a red flag if anyone thoroughly enjoys this flick. Not for reasons most of you think though.

The entire premise of this movie is some underdog kid becoming the literal savior of an entire race and brutally killing two seemingly insurmountable forces of oppression (The emperor and harkonnen/sardaukar armies). A movie like this typically resonates with people whom are deep seeded, grade-A narcissists. Everyone I have encountered who likes this movie is a completely self absorbed asswipe that thinks they are superior to everyone they encounter, that they are somehow “different” or “awake”. I don’t quite understand how this hasn’t been flagged as a right wing extremist coded movie, because it certainly is one.

I built the book up in my mind after seeing it at the library when I was like 8 years old. I always had this idea that it was a super complex sci fi book and I saved it for my thirties. It reads like the fucking Hobbit, literally for children. I set I down after 10 chapters.

they included chani as an attempt to mitigate the strength of what paul represents, but it failed. Everyone I know adored the movie, especially men. I think its' unintentially disseminated extremely powerful anti-establishment ideas about the advantages of becoming radicalised and the power of a strong movement and a strong leader figure in a way that is antithetical to the current system of power we exist in. Great movie, OP is a faggot as usual

Its the water-shed moment in legacy media where the zeitgeist has changed from GWOT neocon anti-'terrorist' jewish dicksucking boomer, to the glorification of literal jihad on the big screen.

>jihad, in Islam, a meritorious struggle or effort. The exact meaning of the term jihād depends on context; it has often been erroneously translated in the West as “holy war.” Jihad, particularly in the religious and ethical realm, primarily refers to the human struggle to promote what is right and to prevent what is wrong.

Hitler was one of the greatest jihadists that ever existed, and paul muad'dib even specifically took inspiration from him in the books.

The stylization is impressive, but I still think the 2001 made for TV syfy version does a better job of telling the actual story from the books.

The story does suffer from "one-itis", but the hero's journey/monomyth is a common trope in books/film. See also: Harry Potter, Star Wars, Spiderman, The Matrix, The Lion King, Lord of the Rings...

Paul is only really the hero in the first part of the story (which is where most film/tv depictions of Dune stop). The problems with his God complex (and those who resent him for it) start to bubble forth in Children of Dune. Of course getting that part of the story would require people to read so womp womp

The books were originally written as a response to George Bush Sr's war in Iraq and operation Desert Storm. Arrakis is, surprise surprise, a stand-in for Iraq, and the "spice" is oil. If anything, the original story was a protest response to right wing politics of the time (similar to how The Hunger Games was commentary on global class disparity), however the interpretation and significance of stories changes over time depending on context.

Dune was written in 1965. Frank Herbert's last book in the series was written in 1985. Desert Storm was in 1990-1991. The Iraqi war (Bush Jr, not Sr) was in 2003. You're a dumbfuck.

>entire series is about how sometimes powerful people have to take the reins of civilization and do terrible things to prevent even worse things from happening
>it is explicitly stated multiple times that this horrendous, terrible path is quite literally the only one that doesnt end in human extinction
>"UHHHHH its about how great leaders are BAD actually"
I maintain that Herbert saw how Heinlein and his work was pretty much posthumously branded as facist and want to avoid that so he post-hoc copped out.

Just finished watching the two new Duncs the other day. Was not expecting Christopher Walken. Fucking ridiculous. Also they missed out on showing Chani's tits. Not that Zendaya is eye candy. Syfy Chani is the best.

I wish Mike Leigh would make a Bond movie instead of Villeneuve, it doesn't have to be a period piece but it's this dramatic notion that Mr Turner or Bond is inherently anachronistic toward his society (which I think Dune was going for).
