If you're a celebrity you kind of lose the right to not be shamed when your life falls apart. That's always inherent to the risk of getting famous in the first place, particularly if you'd like to continue being regarded that way after the fact. It's not a kind media ecosystem but it's also just a reflection of what the people want/expect for the most part.

And all of the "bad behavior" she engaged in became the standard behavior for young women within the next decade. If she had come around just a few years later she would have been a contemporary of Miley Cyrus and no one one would have cared at all about her "wild" outings at the nightclubs.

All true, but I think she actually is much less crazy now compared to when she was in her 20s. The rumor about one of her "yachting" client taking a genuine pity on her and setting her up with a secular Sufi counsellor (Quaranic mysticism-based counselling, but no pressure to convert or anything like that) is probably true.

he was one of the early pioneers of mainstreaming anti-humor. the punchline is that the punchline isn't funny. that's it, that's every Letterman bit. probably revolutionary in the 80s but a bit tired to modern audiences.

Yeah. He was revolutionary and out-there for mainstream America in the 80s when he went on TV. Think in the vein of SNL. That kind of humor and comedy wasn't done on network television. It was very Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno "Safe" comedy. He was way different and a certain group of people flocked to him. You can see it with the reverence that certain comedians like Norm MacDonald did or Conan O'Brien hold him in. He was way different than what America was used to. If you're British, I could see how his style might be typical. If you're young, it's been copied because he was an inspiration to many generations now.

So a celebrity embroiled in controversy decides to go on to a late night comedy talk show, and is under the presumed assumption that there newsworthy controversy will not be discussed?

A lot of those shows will agree not to bring up embarrassing things in order to get the celebrities to participate. Johnny Carson didn't bring up scandals. Neither did Jay Leno. Letterman would bring it up. Especially for people he didn't have a lot of respect for but the network forced on, like Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton. You have to realize even the host doesn't get final say on who comes on. It's definitely a negotiation and the network has a ton of power in deciding it. Letterman might have laid off an actor or musician he respected, but Lohan or Hilton? They were fair game.

>Seriously what the fuck was Letterman's problem?
Letterman was the king of punching down, that's his whole "comedy". 50% of his audience watch his program to feel bad/sadistic about him treating people like shit and the other 50% watch expecting someone to punch him back like Harvey Pekar did. With this setup it was only a question of time until one day something like this happened, where he pushed a broken/weak person a bit too far.
