S1 was peak writing with the gun smuggled into the prison and connecting all the plotlines between the prison gangs, all the tension leading up to the riot in the end.
S2 is still watchable with the aftermath of the riot, after that the entire series falls apart without any overarching story in any of the later seasons.

What's really exaggarated is the looney toons level violence and murder. There's someone killed in almost every episode, a guy set on fire in his hospital bed, a chinese refugee killed with a nailgun, beecher folded into a swastika by the nazis, the priest walled in during the kitchen construction. Emerald city is supposed to be a shitlib social experiment, there's no way they would let it to go on with all the bodies piling up.

Season 7 would have moved to Showtime, no involvement from Tom Fontana. Method Man and some other rapper who guest starred would have been the showrunners. Tom was a good sport and left all 3 of the main characters alive (and incarcerated) at the end of Season 6. He also set some interesting storylines up, like you mentioned. Shame it didn't happen, but rumor has it several episodes were filmed. With lost media becoming such a meme these last couple of years I'm surprised nobody tried to look for them.
