It really pissed me off cause I watched it with high expectations and it was a fucking snoozefest. Not scary, not shocking, not interesting, just boring.

The only outright frightening part was near the beginning with the sister, that was fucked up. The part with the people jumping from the cliff was also a shock, but I don't think it's horror in the sense that only the "outsiders" (the characters we're following) are surprised and this is just the culture, it's not seen as a violent act of human nature.

It's more about unnerving you, but it's overall a "happy" story about someone who has lost everything and is unloved despite giving and giving coming to find a loving family.

It had nothing to do with being male, it was more of a commentary on culture than gender. They killed one of the female visitors. All the guests were not vibing with the culture, they were doing things deemed disrespectful like pissing on the sacred log. They were acting like tourists, foreign elements who didn't want to acclimate to the new culture.
