Most if not all of AJ's issues in later life stem from his relationship with his father.

the realism of meadow and AJ's adolescense is one of the most underrated things about the show, all the irony of tony not wanting AJ in the mafia and then neglecting and hating him for not being a mafia-like toughguy and not magically finding his way in life on his own. and meadow very gradually becoming more and more mobwife-like with the excusing and justifying of the mob existence. there is even a bit where the retarded junkie friend of meadow in season 1, appears to be catching up with meadow and it turns out shes in her final year of medschool or something, having passed meadow degree and boyfriend-hopping all this time.
the therapysessions of AJ are also kino with the therapist just sitting there wide-eyed like he's ready to push a button for having him institutionalised for suicide or schoolshooter threats before giving him meds and not even talking with him.

Tony and Carmella gave AJ everything and he retreated. There was nothing they could have done differently to make him not be an apathetic slacker. Every time AJ has a new plan or direction for his life his parents supported him and he used it as an excuse to dick around forever. Every time he acted out they punished him and he just withdrew and acted like a moody bitch instead of learning anything.

There was honestly nothing they could have done. I'm sure they supported AJ with a nice life through his 20s but let's be honest he burned out and became a 40 year old retiree, killed himself or either died of a drug overdose
