I disagree it develops several iconic and well established characters within 3 hours. A great story, like you say a "fall from grace" one, but I think one of the best there is. By end of Part II Michael seems such a far cry from him at Connie's wedding, but then they show Vito's birthday scene and you realise he was always distant from his family

Godfather, Vertigo and Lawrence of Arabia are the textbook, template classic movies in terms of structure, pace, acting, cinematography etc. You can argue that other movies are even greater but these 3 work as a type of grammar and timeless reference for filmmaking
