My niece works for AMC. I was in town visiting and went to see Elio with my youngest niece, my sister, etc. Free tickets, free XL popcorn, and like $49 in snacks which ultimately cost $6 after all the discounts. Even if the movie was bad at least I got to enjoy some time with my youngest niece who I hadn't seen for two years for basically nothing.

Shorts were a thing almost a literal century ago. Hell, Pete was first introduced in a short literally 100 years ago. It was all included the the movie ticket (a quarter at most) And in modern times Pixar had shorts too. Theaters are pretty fucked no matter what they do.

The actual plan to save theaters would have been for the theaters to get together and refuse to show low quality woke trash made by hacks ten years ago back when they still had authority. This would have put at least some institutional pressure on the studios to protect the integrity of the system on their end. Comic shops should have done the same.

Most theatres are contractually obligated to screen movies and to have so many screenings per day. When Endgame came out, we had to change our school day hours to accodomate for the contractually obligated screenings. We started opening in the morning, ON SCHOOL DAYS, to screen 10:30am or 11am screenings of Endgame that no one showed up to (people didn't start showing up until after 4pm on a school day, shocker!, so all those screenings were also empty). And then we were contractually forced to have screenings up until 11:30pm of Endgame, again on SCHOOL NIGHTS. It was extremely retarded and a waste of employee hours. There's one in every town, a few in every big city. That's how I see movie theaters surviving on, but only if they have a mix of reel projectors and imax imo. Here’s what a movie theatre experience should be. If the movie says it starts at 7:20, then the trailers should start playing at that time, and there should be NO MORE than 3 trailers. Period. End of discussion. Zippo. Debate over. And then the movie starts. Commercials should be playing PRIOR to the 7:20 run time.

Every trailer is shot the same way with the same music and same editing. Minor differences exist between genres but thats it.

Unironically I would go to theaters more if the movie started at the exact time it's scheduled on my ticket. 8:30PM movie starts at 8:30PM. Instead you get into your seat at 8:25 then have to sit through 35 minutes of ads and trailers.
