Every character in the movie had a very simple character arc that a child could understand.

TFA was simply a virtual Star Wars museum tour where nothing happened beyond the protagonist stumbling upon iconic Star Wars things for the audience to clap at
RoS was JJ Abrams having a panic attack desperately trying to undo the last movie and pack in more nostalgia for the nerds

You don't have to like the movie to acknowledge that TLJ is the only actual movie of the trilogy

TFA is a decent movie (not good, but decent) if you isolate it from the larger star wars context. It’s only really bad when you consider what it does to the universe it’s in
