Eventually "actor" reverted to meaning "(male) performer" pretty much exclusively โwhich makes sense, since there was now a dedicated word for female performers, and it's not like it was obscure or anything. Now, yeah, there's a move towards making "actor" gender-neutral again, which wouldn't matter if it were organic/harmless - but it's obviously being pushed by the usual suspects, who love language-policing and muddying the waters re the sexes.
