Compare that to modern acting which tries it's best to look real including the ugly modern nasal Californian accent and lots of mumbling so you can't hear people properly

it's kind of cringe. old movies are only good if they have a good story. real acting doesn't pick up until the 60s.

The average movie actor from 1940 was certainly better than the average movie actor today. I wont say that old movie acting styles is inherently superior to modern movie acting styles, but it certainly had a higher ceiling for greatness. When modern actors are so concerned with acting 'real' it pigeonholes their performances and stops anything truly original and great from appearing. This is why all of the greatest movie actors appeared in old movies and not new ones.
