It's kino. The criticism is because there weren't enough big scale battle scenes for midwits.

I have interest in the sengoku jidai and watch some chanbara now and then
So my parents asked me to watch it with them (I dont live with them but I enjoy watching tv with them)
It took every ounce of my being to not constantly tell them autistic historical details, tell them what the real names of all the characters were, hell even tell them stories of real people that aren't even on screen but are referenced/referred to

By the way if you want a decent (with some inaccuracies but it's for the sake of rule-of-cool) depiction of this same era culminating in the battle of Sekigahara, check out Sekigahara (2017). It's told mostly from the perspective of Ishida Mitsunari and so we get to see Tokugawa as a villain and Ishida as the hero who's just trying to hold the country together.

Given that real life warlords are rarely black-and-white, good-and-evil, it's a nice companion to see how either side could be seen as the tyrant.

The novel is quite long, it explores many aspects of the story in depth. For example, Yabu preferring bussy, but not exclusively. Toranaga has a autist obsession with falconing. Japaense have this sophisticated culture and society but are completely bamboozled by simple concepts like sea legs, and swimming.

Why is the obsession with bussy so universal in non-western cultures? Or is it the west that is strange for never developing a taste for bussy after Rome fell?

The battle was won before any soldier took to the field, that's the whole point of the story, that the battle itself wasn't truly fought with swords.

seriously what is it with zoomers inability to actually understand and process what they are watching. The entire story of Shogun is a politcal chess match for control of Japan. We see this unfold mostly through the perspective of Blackthorne/Anjin-San but ultimately he is just one of the chess pieces. Though his arrival and involvement does affect the strategies used to attempt to gain control.

its an intrinsic problem of the novel. all the exciting stuff where Blackthorn's decisions matter is at the start, then the climactic moment of the story is when side character changes her mind about which asshole she trusts the least. you can make a case for it being a story with no protagonist.

I said the point of the story, the battle isn't important to the story so it's not actually detailed beyond the idea that it occured.
