I don't think they had a distribution issue. I think they didn't know how to market it according to Proyas. Still, those reviews came from people who saw it and it was mostly unfavorable. Yet it continued to develop a cult following until it became a cult classic and peeled more and more midwits from the center of the bell curve.
Pretty much the only type of movie that would fit with OP's image is a movie that failed on release because midwits hated it, but it developed a cult following amongst dimwits and high IQ people. That's a very small amount of movies.
