The show need the Roiland spark. They should rehire him. He’s always been the funniest thing in the show. They just need other people working on it to get it on the air. I also think the shows arc was too complicated, and nobody but fans can understand it…I’ve seen all the episodes and I can’t explain what happened. It’s time to make it funny or fix the story arc or say goodbye. Because I watched shows like Dr Who as they are crashing and in hindsight I kept thinking it would get better someday. The show has sucked for a while and it’s sucked for the same reason going red or Elio sucked: the creatives currently driving it haven’t actually done anything in life and people can only write what they know
The show was always nominally sci-fi but under the hood it was a show about WRITING a sci fi show. The creatives aren’t scientists or inventors. They’re writers and a lot of the themes (and more and more often, jokes) have been about writing a script and the creative and business process that entails
Its interesting as an occasional aside but it has become more and more central to the show as time has gone by and the people working on it are mostly burned out millennials who only know script writing and nothing else so they have nothing else to talk about
This becomes really obvious in the worst episodes like Never Ricking Morty (the train episode), Full Metal Jackrick, and whatever last nights episode was called
The people writing the show right now are boring human beings who have obsessed for years about breaking in to Hollywood with their shitty scripts and so that’s all they have to talk about

I'd not watched Reddit and Peepee this decade, but watched this episode on a whim. Holy shit, it felt like the most corporate mandated slop to promote the new Superman film coming out next week imaginable, right down to the director cameo where they just lather praise on the guy. If you're going to make fun of franchise films, why not have an expy of Kevin Fiege (who has an actual proven track record) show up so you can pour a bucket of shit over him?

The film franchise in the episode (robot trees?) didn't resemble anything that actually exists (was is supposed to be Transformers?) and wasn't funny or clever. Entire thing felt about five years too late as well, the MCU's got dementia and every other attempt at a comparable franchise has been binned for videogame adaptations.
