Very underrated film. Arguably better than the original in some ways.

First movie is slower ergo more artsy and was groundbreaking for its time but the show delves much deeper into the themes. I also prefer the animation and portrayal of the characters in the show, the movie has a certain early simpsons sloppiness to it where the characters look uncanny in a lot of scenes. Why do you prefer the movie?

Sorry I don't mean the animation is sloppy just that the look of the characters is a little uncanny and inconsistent, similar to some early simpsons smear frames. I just generally like the look, sound and characterization of the characters as they're depicted in SaC better as well.

I enjoy cyberpunk movies for the visuals. They completely failed in predicting the jingoistic smartphone X drone panopticon enveloping us forever.

First movie isn't slow. Nor sloppy. It's unironically the best of them. All the other movies/shows veer off course and don't give the audience what they enjoyed about the first movie. There's a reason you hardly hear about them while everyone still raves about the first movie. It's funny people would call it slow when compared to the other movie where there's a seemingly neverending scene of them coming into the same slightly different room over and over and over until they finally realize they're being tricked by a computer. Wow, amazing stuff. What a huge waste of screentime.

Innocence is only worthwhile if you watch all the in-between TV stuff to build a better appreciation of Batou and Togusa imo. Otherwise itโ€™s a creepy doll story basically.

the first film has a meditativeness the rest of the entire franchise was never able to capture ever again.

the invisible criminal reaching that clearing and the slight smile creeping across his face at seeing and feeling freedom, and we see what he sees, a beautiful neotokyo skyline, everything is just calm for a handful of seconds.

the sequels did not understand this feeling. instead, every subsequent entry in the series seemed to lean WAAAAAY too heavily into this whole corporate cyber scientific espionage sabotage stuff that just wasnt super interesting

the akiko corporation was money laundering to hide the misdealing of krishna-cybernetics who was in bed with their local police but those police had a program installed on them by a rogue hacker group named g-sec who has member who used to work for a software company called KelSoft and-

it just never ends. I wanted more meditative moments, but not only that, it also misses those moments like when the major blows herself up trying to rip off the tank-head, this kind of characterization without saying anything, you feel her desperation to prove herself, you feel her internal struggle in that moment, like she barely cares what happens to that fucking cybernetic body. its amazing. the following movies and shows dont really capture any of that

Plus I wanted more of the major/puppetmaster plotline. They merged but I don't think it ever went anywhere beyond that? Shouldn't there be more AI life cropping up all over? Batou wasn't as interesting to follow around.
