The movie suffers from Nolan's poor writing and a lack of editors. If what we wanted was a movie warning about the effects of flora collapse and the effects of time dilation on the family, then the extra-dimensional sections are completely meaningless and only serve to weaken said messages, especially when the protagonist pops up and literally everything is okay thanks to GHOST SIGNALS. The movie could have been an entire half-hour shorter and ended after the scene with the rogue astronaut trying to escape and the movie would have been 100% more poignant. After TDK, Nolan got a huge head and studios started giving him blank checks, and his productions suffered for it.

Interstellar is terrible. All the major emotional moments are crude cue cards where the actors cry in closeups so the audience knows it's time to feel sad (Michael Caine's hospital breakdown was so overacted and ridiculous that I almost started laughing in the theater), and the actual plot is that omnipotent robots from the future save humanity via time travel which makes Interstellar a fantasy movie. Maybe taking a magic portal to elemental worlds didn't tip people off but they really should've picked up on this by the time the main character dives into a black hole and ends up in a magical nexus where he can see into his own past.
