Yes, the script and gags are wittier than any other romance of its era but I found The Apartment (1960) to be somewhat of a headache to get through.

The boss adulterer had WAY too much screentime and way too many lines for being a one-dimensional antagonist. None of the clever lines of the movie were written for him, it was just "don't you see how difficult of a position this is, being married and all?" over and over and over again.

Baxter's main attribute being "can't say no" wasn't particularly compelling either. The sappy and somewhat unbelievable ending felt off after just seeing Sunset Boulevard--I know audiences want every conflict to have a perfect resolution (especially in romances), but in this case it's definitely silly. It's not enough that Baxter has truly learned to say no, he has to also get the girl who has just now had a change of heart immediately after the boss leaves his wife.

Do I think The Apartment is overrated? Yes. But I really wish the cinematography in Billy Wilder's films was a little more impressive; I think that would make the works deserving of the prestige they currently hold.

the boss having no personality is an aspect of him being a great antagonist. he's also an idiot who doesn't know what the word "propagate" means.

it's underlining that the world of the movie is transactional not meritocratic.

I love this movie, and I remember vividly the first time I saw it because Fran's suicide attempt really shocked me. The movie comes on in a somewhat cutesy way, with Bud's quirky narration, but its intentions are more serious. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are so naturally adorable and sympathetic -- it's easy to judge them right off as feather-light characters suitable for an escapist comedy, but they both have a concealed loneliness that isn't easily repaired. It's also a beautiful looking movie. The cinematography isn't flashy, but it has a wonderful dynamism.

For me it's a touching movie and a humane movie because it shows us characters who are betraying themselves but are still deserving of some sympathy. It's a movie that influences me to be less hard on myself.

I know everyone else in the whole world disagrees with me about this, but it's not clear to me that Bud "gets the girl" at the end. He has grown worthy of Fran's affections, but I think its significant that the movie doesn't end with them sharing a kiss. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. Maybe their lives take them in different directions.

Is it possible to avoid this? He keeps Fran in a holding pattern as long as possible by protesting his own helplessness to act. His goal is to maintain the status quo of being free to bang Fran without having to give up his marriage or his respected position. I thought the scene where Bud calls him and he's with his family on Christmas was striking. Maybe just because you're shown the wife and kids whom he's deceiving. It's poignant. Also, we see some evidence that Sheldrake has a harmonious and prosperous home life, that he hasn't been driven into Fran's arms by an obnoxious wife or maladjusted children. It shows the viewer that Sheldrake's position is a consequence of character, not of circumstance.
