why does Reddit love this movie so much? why is the modern internet filled with manic depressive fags that deliberately want to feel depressed all the time?

by the time i thought, "you know what would be a good gimmick? if it wasn't all dour, and had a happy ending," they did that with the lesbians one. but it still relies on the premise that i take a 1:1 virtual-reality clone of someone to just 'be them'. which i don't believe.

more the tone of it, really, what i'm expected to buy into. all these characters happen to be Machiavellian pricks? it really comes across like Charlie Brooker and them have this nasty attitude about people i just don't share.

even if someone was a nonce, people would work together to go after that nonce. their writing follows this pattern of "humanity is sick, in the science-fiction future there'd be all these nonces, wouldn't there? unfettered, we all have the capacity to commit horrible acts!" i mean sure, but it's so INTENTIONALLY bleak (rather than realistic) it becomes stupid.

Some of it is really obvious, a lot of people would die in the initial blasts, utilities and communications would stop working, and what's left of the healthcare system would quickly be overwhelmed with more sick and injured people than can possibly be treated. Clearly not all of it is inaccurate, it happened in Japan in 1945.

The whole point of the movie is that we've become far too interdependent with the vast majority of humans possessing little to no survivable skills, and this was back in the 80s.

You're right that the portrayed dystopia in Threads wouldn't happen, because it would probably be much worse.

Recent research does not debunk but instead reinforces the notion from the movie that nuclear war would destroy the ozone layer and expose us to a lot more UV light, for a decade or more.
So 50 years later it probably wouldn't be back to normal, you would still have tons of people being prematurely aged and afflicted with way more cancer and cataracts etc than today

During the Gulf War of 1991, the oil fires lit by Saddam's forces had an atmospheric effect comparable to a significant nuclear exchange.
There was ZERO measurable effect on the climate or weather, either locally or globally. Since 1991, the theory of nuclear winter has been quietly dropped by the scientific community.

Discussion of nuclear winter is a discussion about atmospheric pollution, not directly about radiation. According to proponents like Carl Sagan, the mechanism that causes nuclear winter would be the massive firestorms that would hypothetically ensue in a nuclear exchange.
The oil fires of 1991 were the largest single non-volcanic emission of airborne pollution ever measured, and they were at the level that Sagan said would cause a cooling effect, and they had no such effect. Ergo, nuclear winter is not a valid theory.

7/10 rule, radiation levels exponentially decrease with time. Within a few days of a nuclear detonation, fallout will have largely dropped to levels comparable to background radiation. Elevated risk of cancer over the next few decades for sure, but the chances of you developing ARS (i.e. your hair falling out and intestines melting) after the first few days of a nuclear exchange are near-zero.

Also depicting everyone as being illiterate 10 years after a nuclear war is retarded. Literacy is universal enough at this point that it would survive the apocalypse. Even if there are no schools around, your parents could still teach you bare minimum reading and writing.

Sagan himself publicly said in early 1991 that the Kuwaiti (and southern Iraqi) oil fields potentially being lit should cause regional cooling in South Asia.
They were lit, and all of the Sagan's predictions failed to materialize. Nuclear winter has not been a serious theory since 1991.

You know air moves, right? Smoke over a few square miles of desert doesn’t change much. Hence why various volcanic eruptions don’t instantly cause nuclear winters.

Nuclear winter is about blocking the sun long enough to kill most plant life, which starves most/all animal life. The theory isn’t “dropped,” but no longer relevant without the possibility of GLOBAL nuclear war. And yes, the international community would be completely justified in utterly destroying anyone who uses a nuke in warfare.

And you most definitely aren't going to have "nuclear winter" as >>212450337 pointed out.

>This thread is clearly just propaganda to get people comfortable with nuclear war.

No one here is rooting for nuclear war you dingus. But honestly, pollution caused by the physical destruction of cities (asbestos, pulverized concrete, and the like entering the atmosphere) would be a far greater cause for long-term concern because unlike radiation, that doesn't go away. Think all of all the nasty health problems the toxic dust kicked up from the destruction of two buildings during the September 11th attacks caused. Now imagine that happening to entire cities, and it's not being cleaned up because law and order has effectively disintegrated.

The deeply depressed really do feel catharsis at the thought of death and some highly anxious people at the thought of others being subjected to their misery. The suicidal can actually, completely counterintuitively, stall their own deaths by fantasising about suicide, because it gives them some small relief. However, there are the truly anti-social who have the desire to believe that the rest of society is as dysfunctional and deranged as they are. They know that, in a disaster, they'd immediately resort to hording, stealing, begging etc. and would refuse to labour for a common good because they despise their fellow Man; thus everyone MUST be the same way, and so a ruthless and oppressive military dictatorship can be the only imaginable outcome by them. Threads' depiction of a return to serfdom under civil occupation isn't what they want, but the idea that people would collaboratively work to better each other's lives is antithetical to their deeply alienated worldview.

why does Reddit love this movie so much? why is the modern internet filled with manic depressive fags that deliberately want to feel depressed all the time?

We did have some mini ice age events from volcano eruptions where the ashes in the air blocked the sunlight for a few years and ruined the food production. But it wasn't permanent. So the concept of nuclear winter isn't unthinkable just very exaggerated. Recent studies on the asteroid strike that caused the extinction of dinosaurs showed that the levels of sulfur in the atmosphere were much lower than they thought so acid rain and other secondary effects weren't that bad.

We measure volcanic eruptions in megatons. Which is a million tons of tnt. Krakatoa was 200. We measure nukes like that too. At the height of the Cold War there were over 62k nuclear warheads ready to go.

Japan is doing fairly well for itself despite getting nuked twice. People live just fine in Hiroshima even. Also, all those thousands of nuclear tests done by the USA and Russia poisoned the ecosystem more than any nuclear exchange would, yet, we still live. You may argue that cancer rates have increased, but treatment also got better.
