It was supposed to be one movie, but the script was too long and they didn't want to cut any of the setpieces, so they split it in two and padded both of them out.
>Paris was the main villain, a male terrorist who serves the Entity. He had no past history with Ethan, and would have been played by Nicholas Hoult. Post-split, they created Gabriel and made Paris his female enforcer turned Ethan’s ally.
>Jasper Briggs being the son of Jim Phelps was originally not a big reveal, and Grace was his idealistic young partner who eventually sides with Ethan. Post-split, they made the Phelps connection a twist, Grace was reimagined as a thief who gets caught in Ethan’s mission, and Theo Degas was created to be Briggs’s partner.
>Ilsa was meant to be Ethan’s love interest, but Rebecca Ferguson wanted to leave the franchise after MI7, so they killed Ilsa and promoted Grace to Ethan’s new love interest as well.
>The original plot structure seemed to be White Widow’s gala in Rome > Orient Express heist > Submarine rescue > Final battle at the doomsday bunker in Africa.
