It was supposed to be one movie, but the script was too long and they didn't want to cut any of the setpieces, so they split it in two and padded both of them out.

>Paris was the main villain, a male terrorist who serves the Entity. He had no past history with Ethan, and would have been played by Nicholas Hoult. Post-split, they created Gabriel and made Paris his female enforcer turned Ethan’s ally.

>Jasper Briggs being the son of Jim Phelps was originally not a big reveal, and Grace was his idealistic young partner who eventually sides with Ethan. Post-split, they made the Phelps connection a twist, Grace was reimagined as a thief who gets caught in Ethan’s mission, and Theo Degas was created to be Briggs’s partner.

>Ilsa was meant to be Ethan’s love interest, but Rebecca Ferguson wanted to leave the franchise after MI7, so they killed Ilsa and promoted Grace to Ethan’s new love interest as well.

>The original plot structure seemed to be White Widow’s gala in Rome > Orient Express heist > Submarine rescue > Final battle at the doomsday bunker in Africa.

No reason why it couldn't be one movie given none of the setpieces except the Submarine and the Train Heist were noteworthy.

Why do they have to have love interests in these films? I know he needs to rescue someone, but couldn't it just be a teammate or some senator or the Queen or whatever?

Serious question, when does the Camrip come out? I've been looking for it every day, but nothing appears on the pirate bay.

I hated how they sidelined the Entity so hard and reduced it to diet Coke Skynet.

>Nicholas Hoult
Why is the guy so flavour of the month? He has no presence at all. Anyway sounds like the changes were for the best but we all wanted Rebecca Ferguson to stay on tho. I don't know why people dislike either of the final two, they are absolute kino, Final Reckoning is the only film I've seen in forever that really feels like a true cinema experience.

submarine was one the more interesting action scenes i've seen in a while. the movie is all wonky because that should have been the climax really. no one gives a fuck about gabriel or ethan's hamfisted romance and hanging onto planes is almost trite at this point with tom cruise.
should have been do sub sequence, ethan manages to get the thing, cut to ppl looking at some doomsday clock saying he's not going to make it, sub starts rolling around or something but he plugs the thing into the other magic thing and stops the computers but they get some magic signal saying submarine is destroyed, people think ethan died, everyone is happy the world isn't dead, news story about tragic loss of ethan or something and then you just steal the ending from the bourne ultimatum

Exactly how I would've imagined and executed it as would anyone with the slightest understanding of building cohesive drama but ultimately, you got to remind yourself Tom is well into his 60's and has total control over his projects now and won't take no for an answer on anything. McQ just points the camera at this point. I don't doubt he wanted the submarine to be the final setpiece but Tom wanted to do this other stunt so they worked that in there. They adjusted the plot to fit into it and the entire third act is a complete writeoff. It is a huge shame Tom's hubris and preference for stunts over story did the movies in this badly but he's Tom Cruise and he gets his way. Always.
