his humor is derived from his perceived underdog status and self deprecating style. he would've had to shed all of that to be an effective host of the Tonight Show. the mainstream audience doesn't want to see some self perceived freak flagellate himself, they want someone with more confidence. even Letterman was too weird for the Tonight Show audience and he's way more confident than Conan

Conan was popular in the late late slot because itโ€™s a different audience than the late night slot. One of his first tonight showโ€™s he put on a disguise and did a focus group where most say they donโ€™t like him.
His audience has always been small compared to those in the 10 oโ€™clock slots.

Partly true, but a lot of it comes down to Letterman and Leno being boomer humor, and Conan was very millennial coded. Only boomers have a religious subservience to the television. By the late 2000's, millennials were weren't watching scheduled TV as much.

conan is the goat of just wandering around in public riffing off of what he's seeing and experiencing, he's also a great interviewer and a solid writer, although his best writing years were behind him long before he became a talkshow host.

I say that he was always surrounded by classic liberals, then he went to commiefornia, and the blatant marxist subverters who run hollywood there corrupted him. They did the same to a heap of politically neutral or classic liberal celebs over time, especially anyone who moves there.

I think the writers with actual creativity wound up on the low budget areas of tv because they could come up with creative stuff but weren't good at climbing the ladder
its why all that main stream stuff is so insanely terrible, it's all talentless hacks that are just good at networking or nepobabies in the high salary jobs

(a quick glance at his twitter years ago when i still used it, damn (((they))) really have gotten to him too, i remember following him years ago and never really tweeted any politicfag stuff (this was before he wrote for Colbert) usually just posted good clips from old sketch shows and his favorite musical performances on old 90s Conan shows

for the tonight show he lost lorne's protection and nbc was watching for once and giving him notes, he lost creative control and only really brought it back when he was getting fired

Yes. Late night time slot afforded him the ability to be more irreverent, since his primary audience would be 18-34. When he moved to the earlier time slots, he had to make sure his show wouldn't alienate the 50+ year olds and soccer mom types who watch the earlier night time comedians.

NBC had to pay out his contract to the tune of almost $45 million (nearly $70m today accounting for inflation) to get Leno back in the slot. Conan made out like an absolute bandit, then saw over a decade of moderate success on TBS where he made almost $12 million a year.

his thing was he was a creepy weird nerd/loser and he would make fun of himself for it. he had this really awkward creep persona which obviously has a lot of comedic merit its basically like having an endless wellspring.
then he got married and had kids, amassed wealth, probably new upper crust friends, probably happy 24/7
totally crushed his creativity
basically the same shit that happened to larry david

>If weโ€™re going to have good comedies again weโ€™re going to need writers rooms filled with >75% Jewish men

The current generation of jews aren't as funny as the older generations. Gen X jews used up all their best material years ago and everyone in Hollywood has gotten so uptight about identity politics and woke bullshit that they're afraid to step on anyone's toes. The result is that every joke is just targeted at white conservatives ad nauseum because they're the only people they're allowed to make fun of. Throw on the veneer of pushing the bizarre alien social values of Hollywood and they come off as completely unrelatable disingenous propagandists.

Take Curb Your Enthusiasm as an example. Larry David is the funniest jew of his generation and the early seasons of Curb are great; but after his hiatus in the reboot years he loses the plot, Larry becomes unrelatable and the democrat agenda pushing becomes so in your face that it starts sucking the joy out of everything.

There's no going back. The old jews aren't funny anymore and the new jews never were. The whole system has to die and be rebuilt by new studios that actually have to sell real comedy to the public instead of just coasting by controlling the system.

Same. A lot of comedian panel shows have came and went since then and none were as close to as good as tough crowd which just had this realness and ball busting the other wannabes never did. Like someone once put it, tough crowd was as close to a televised look at the back room of a comedy club of comics shooting the shit and busting each other balls as we ever got. CQ basically invented the format of all the comedian hangout podcasts we have today and doesnโ€™t typically get the credit for it.

People that used to like him in the 80s all thought he sold out in the 90s once he got the tonight show and was doing Doritos commercials.
