Yes, Zack Snyder got political with Superman and much of what James Gunn is doing with his new movie seems to be inspired by what Snyder originally did but the BIGGEST difference between both takes is that Snyder's Superman was fucking patriotic! Superman was proudly American, worked together with the US army, saved the world from Zod who stood in for Osama Bin Laden, and in the sequel the people giving him shit where those bought politicians at the congress trying to hold him back from being Superman. It was a criticism against the congress, the deep state, and the news media. This precisely when Donald Trump was president and was getting attacked from all sides.
